The video, narrated by Robbie Ventura, a teammate of Lance Armstrong on the former U.S. Postal Service Team, presents the do's and don'ts for new drivers for when they encounter bicyclists on the road.
To make Illinois roads safer by bicyclists, copies of the video have been distributed to 900 high school and private driving education programs and to more than 900 police and sheriff's departments. The Illinois High School and College Driver Education Association, the Illinois Department of Transportation's Division of Traffic Safety, the Illinois Secretary of State's office and the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation provided valuable advice and assistance in the production of the video
I'm usually pretty critical of things like this, but I couldn't find a thing to complain about.

I thought it was really good, the best I've seen. My only comment would be some more emphasis on cyclists doing a little more to be cautious, like warning them to slow down or stop coming off a MUT to cross a street. Especially in a situation like they showed of the car making a right immediately next to the crosshatching for a crossing. Other than that I wish they'd show it in every driver ed class and all the remedial classes for drivers.

One scene shows the car rounding a turn and almost hitting the cyclist crossing the street from a MUP. The MUP has the stop sign that the cyclist clearly disregards. But, the movie makes it look like the motorist is at fault.
Also, there were several scenes with riders riding in the gutter or to far to the right but their unsafe lane position was not mentioned.
Overall, I would rate the movie a 'B'.
I thought it was great... my only caveat would be that some of the cyclists in some sections of the video are cowering along the curb.
But as far as an overall message... I would love to see this played in every driver's ed class.
As far as an instructional video for cyclists... it needs work.
The thing to keep in mind is that this is not for cyclists, it's Drivers ED. I don't like to see cyclists hugging the edge of the road, but it does reflect the reality out there on the roads.
I found this video remarkable, because for the most part people in policy positions agree with cycling advocacy only in principle; when it comes to actually getting motorists to change their behavior they get all queasy.
I e-mailed this to all my fellow Board Members in the club -- and plan on making some more phone calls - I'd love to have this distributed in NYS.
I've had a pretty rough year so far this year bicycling.
Been a deer in the headlights - and if it weren't some pretty snazzy riding I would have been a hood ornement, had two mirrors snapped off --- last one was in heavy traffic and I caught this red car hugging the curb - I couldn't go anywhere! - she snapped my mirror - her head buried deep on her shoulder on the cell phone --- was thinking of catching up to her at the stoplights - until I heard something and the other lane going my direction had a turd in an expensive car --- who was now holding up traffic in his lane to pace me to yell and me to get on the sidewalk as I'm a Fxxxx Axxxxx! And there are more experiences this Summer as well, especially the sidewalk "bleat".
Rochester is NOT and never has been bicycle friendly. And neither are the drivers-friendly

Agreed... and the reality side is probably a good way to view this... as cyclists are indeed a mixed bunch. The other think I enjoyed about it was the mix of TDF and NASCAR... Too bad Lance couldn't deliver this message to the masses.
