Commuting - Been a while but down goes Frazier.....

or me :( If you know SD City and the situation it's in you can see why the roads are a mess. Coming him from the airshow I got caught in the rain. Somewhere in there I got a snakebite off of one of those quarter sized rocks due to the zero street sweeping going on. Well, as I start across a painted zone BAM, I go down like a left hook from Ali. Major road rash but the bike faired ok. If it wasn't for the slow leak I would have been ok.

I could rant for hours about the condition of our roads but the best I can do is to hit the website and report bad road spots and hope they get fixed before the year changes. Do they make solid rubber road tires? :D

Going down in rain isn't so bad, you just end up sliding a lot farther than you should heh.

Tire pressure was 120. The problem with the local roads is lack of maint. Worst feeling is cruising along in the dark, car on one side, curb to the other and there is a mine field of quarter sized rocks off a gravel truck you have to go right through. Ker-------pop or ssssssssssSSSSSSS

If you can run bigger tires, you'll have less danger of snakebite. I have a lot of those sized rocks at one point of my commute; that's why I've stuck with 700 x 32mm slicks at 90-100 psi rather than a thinner, faster tire.

This is one of the problems with bike lanes - they are always dirtier than the car roadway.

My training bike is a tri bike running 650s so I don't know how big i can go.

Yep I went down last week and rashed up my left side pretty good. Kinda weird having all the scabs peel this week (yuck!). Haven't had road rash like this in 20 years and even then it was just on my arms.

Incidentally I just read a tetinus shot boost is a good idea if your shots are out of date and you get deep road rash.

L.A.'s crappy roads is the reason I run around on a cyclocross frame that can run big azz tires. Right now I'm compromising with some 700x35 touring tires. It seems they have simply stopped sweeping the streets around here anymore. I was riding to work the other morning just wincing everytime my rear tire spit a hunk of gravel out sideways. You ride for a while waiting for that hiss hiss hiss. I didn't flat. But I'm afraid it's just a matter of time. At least let it be the front.
