View Full Version : Are personal attacks and name calling permitted in this forum?

If your answer is 'YES' here are a few:
Diane: Delusional psychotic who's cycling skills are so poor she has to rely on... a third wheel!!! She is paralyzed by the fear of riding in traffic and scuttles along cowering in the bike lane... at 6 MPH.
Bek: Hit his head so many times he thinks 'fog' and 'pea soup' are the same thing. So devoted to bike lanes, he thinks a 4' wide section of asphalt demarcated by 2 paint stripes sandwiched between high-speed auto lanes is a good thing....
Brian Ratliff: Reading and comprehension ability of a small child. Needs someone to steady him so he can wipe his arse (gets help from Littlelittleman).

No, personal attacks or name calling is not allowed. And along those lines...any P&R topical "debate" should be kept out of the A&S and the Living Car Free forum as well IMHO. There are too many "attention wh0re" "activists" who just have to have their "voice" heard. I surmise that THAT is the reason why %90 of the personal attacks and name calling exists on this site.
There is a separate forum (as well as many other internet sites) for people to rant, rave, moan, -itch, whine and complain about how we all should be raw vegans, abandon our automobiles in order to save the world, how global warming will kill us all, how Democrats are (fill in the blank), how Republicans are (fill in the blank), how Libertarians love shopping at Walmart and smoke pot, etc, etc, ETC.
Seriously...if you really believe that your political and religous OPINION is that important...keep it in the P&R forum. Thats where all political and religous "activism" belongs. Oh yeah...there is no name calling or personal attacks there either, but some COULD mistake that as "seasoned" debate. **rolls eyes** But, at least all that wisdom and activism is segregated into the P&R forum and out of the forums that contain bicycle related topics.

Taint a topic for polls. That is the mods decision.
While I find name calling pretty lame I also find topics like this that are a veiled attack on one side, where both sides have done the same thing even more lame.

what's a scicotic?
I believe that is a fictional narcotic drug from a science fiction novel, i.e. Slow Death from A Scanner Darkly.
or...maybe a painkiller to relieve sciatica?

i say name calling isn't part of reasoned debate, but it sure doesn't stop 4 or 5 folks in here from continually arguing about the same dead horse topics and then getting all bent out of shape when nobody changes their mind...
this is the reason i don't really read anything in A&S anymore. i got tired of the same 4 or 5 people saying the same 2 or 3 things to each other (and calling each other the same names, using the same lame personal attacks, etc) over and over and over.
IMHO self-importance and self-righteousness aren't part of reasoned debate either, but maybe that's just my definition of it...

For someone who threw the mud first, you sure are seeming to take this a bit personally. Just an observation...
So, are you in the medical field then? A doctor, perhaps? Explains the stuck-upish-ness you display here. If not, are you a hypocrite then? Taking a hypocritical oath? In any case, are you really comparing yourself to one of the great founders of the medical field? Can you say... presumptuous? And what does "galen" have anything to do with cycling? And the number 52657, why, that must be the devil's second line.
Sorry about that. See? Everything is better if you say "sorry" afterwards. I voted no, it is not okay to insult; I wish I could change that though - this is kind of fun. And all I have to do is apologize afterwards and it is perfectly legit mud slinging. Ain't the internet great. I don't even have to worry about you hitting me after I say something.

Oh, so you're "Galen," the Greek philosopher?
I had no idea. I shall change my handle from henceforth to appropriately reflect my lower stature.
;)
Galen, don't you think when you start a fire like this thread, you might get the smell of smoke on you?
Besides, I thought it was all in good fun!

Brian, Brian, Brian....where do we start?
First, check out the 'HH is a zealot' thread for the first mud. Second, I made no claim to be related with, to or associated in any way to the medical field. If you bothered to read Littlelittleman's post you would notice that he asked 'what is a galen?'. I was simply pointing him to a suitable reference so as to answer his question, since he had no idea. Why do you read things into a post that are just not their? Preconceived notions????
As far as my relationship to Galen? It's my name, plain as that. It's a name that has been used in my family for several generations. Is that OK with you? Not that I really care. And if you really need to know.... not than anyone with more than a few brain cells shouldn't have figured it out 52657 is my birthday. So, stick that in your holier-than-thou hemp pipe and light it up.
The 'presumption' is on you.
Yes, they are permitted, in practice if not in the rules. It would be trivial to pull up dozens of examples from A&S. While there is a certain amount of personal commentary inherent in heated debate, some posters here make a habit of it and continuously get away with it.
I guess BF.net is like the roads.... traffic rules and actual behavior are very different things.
Yes. All other forms of discourse are off-topic here.

TOS = Terms of Service - you probably agreed to one upon sign-up.

Brian, Brian, Brian....where do we start?
First, check out the 'HH is a zealot' thread for the first mud.
That would be second mud. The survey regarding whether or not HH is a zealot was posted in response to HH's assertions that:
"Whacko zealots with strong wrong-headed convictions have made it very difficult for those of us with strong convictions based on logic and reason. Very few people have the critical analysis capabilities and skills required to be able to discern and appreciate the difference. That means I can only reach those that do have those capabilities and skills."

Nonsense! Proper cycling attire is ALWAYS an appropriate topic. Any man who disagrees is a _ _ _. Women are welcome to post on topic material also. Others? Do your thing!

Galen, Galen, Galen... where does it end?
Evidently, revealing your name was too hard for you. Instead, you hide behind a philosopher, what a pu... never mind. And anyone knows that there aren't 52 days in the month of June.
Waa, waa, waa... They called us names first!!!!! Galen, you crack me up. ROFLMAO!! For someone who's nearly 50, your buttons are sure easy to press. After 50 years, you'd think you'd have a thicker skin. Perhaps you are just the "sensitive" type... Midlife crisis perhaps? Male menopause? Must be something...
Oh, and sorry 'bout that. Makes it all better, remember? Isn't the internet great? I can insult from a distance and not even read the response!

I don't care what names you call me, I just enjoy the give-and-take. I am glad I crack you up! I find your discourse equally amusing! The miles of cable between are just as enabling to you as anyone else! So I am glad we can both agree that personal insults are perfectly OK.....
