Five, personally, though there are others in the family:
--Rivendell Rambouillet
--Rivendell Atlantis (an all-around frame, with fat tires, sort of a combination hybrid/touring setup)
--Cannondale MB1000, mid-'90s hardtail mountain bike (don't ride it a lot, but I live a mile from a national forest and it's fun)
--Old Bridgestone MB3, set up with fenders, slicks and rack, for commuting
--'80s Trek 620 touring bike, converted to singlespeed, that I keep under the stairs at work to ride at lunch and around town.

Only three.

I am seriously looking to adopt a comfort road bike to expand the family to four.

It would appear that the 50+ crowd is more interested in comfort than racing, with all respects to Will Dehne recent upgrade to racer deluxe status.:) (Note to Will no disrespect intended whatsoever, I am in awe of your accomplishments.)

1 Kettler Silverstar commuter bike (primary ride)
2 Specialized Crossroads hybrid, with fenders and lights (Backup bike; seldom used)
3 Wife's Nishiki road bike (I'm encouraging her to use it more)
4 Child's bike, training wheels removed (daughter's record is 15 seconds before getting off; working on longer)
6 Adams Trail-A-Bike (used every weekday in summer to transport child)*
7 InStep Turbo Trailer (Used to be primary child hauler; now occasional use for groceries)*

* Strictly speaking, not a bike, but a bike attachment. However, it can carry a person or cargo and is pulled by a bike.

No joy in racing nowadays but bikes have to work. If they don't I don't ride them. Plus the fact that I prefer to get out and ride instead of the harder work of training- that gets in the way of my riding

As to no. of bikes- Too many

Spec RockHopper.....fitted with SunTour-- to indicate it's age.

I have thinned my herd recently... I have a 1 bedroom apartment with no garage, so I needed the room. I am down to:

1955 Schwinn Corvette

1960 Schwinn Jaguar (disassembled at the moment)

Early 1970's Austrian built Sears Finest 10 speed (currently an 18 speed)

1974 Raleigh Sports (Lady's frame) (anyone want a free bike?)

Mid 1970's Varsity... perhaps on its way to Ohio to a new owner

1980ish Nishiki Custom Sport (Currently a 10 speed, perhaps destined to become a 3 speed)

1989 Centurion Dave Scott Ironman Master

Early 1990's Raleigh MT-500 set up as a comfort bike.

2003 Giant Sedona DX

Some of what I have thinned out in the past year or so:

early 1970's Corky, Reynolds 531 with all Campy (poor shape) Parted out and given away.

An old Huffy purchased with the Corky, in even worse shape. Trashed.

1970's Motobecane mixte. Parted out and trashed

1979 Schwinn Suburban. Parted out and trashed

1980 Ladie's Varsity. Parted out and trashed

1989 Cannondale Touring bike. Parted out and trashed

Some old bike I bought at a thrift store for the shifters. Parted out and trashed

1980ish Univega Custom 10. Donated to the Salvation Army... I see it around town.

Old Nishiki. Parted out and trashed.

No wonder I have so many bike parts in the apartment.

2003 Trek 5200
1991 Trek 2100

We also own a 2003 Santana Sovereign tandem

You've collected 4 bikes in less than 2 years?

Usually when one has 4 or more bikes, some are holdovers from long-past purchases, or restoration projects.

Me, I've only got 1, a mid-80's Bridgestone CB-1 that I bought new.

But I'm actively in the market and test riding new bikes. As others have indicated, right now I'm looking for a good quality but comfortable bike. Have tested everything from overly comfortable crank-forward Townies to more road-oriented hybrids like the Trek 7.x FX series, Cannondale, and Marin. At first I was leaning to comfort and almost purchased a very comfort-oriented model. But then I went out and put another 30-40 miles on the Bridgestone and have decided that I need something just a bit more performance-oriented. But not as road-oriented as the Trek FX, which roadies consider slow.

At some point this winter I will own 2 bikes. Maybe something like a Trek 7500 or Fuji Crosstown 1.0.

Retro Grouch
10-26-06, 04:35 PM
1. 2000 (or so) Klein Quantum Race "go-fast" road bike. Compact crank, carbon handlebar.
2. 1990 (or so) Bridgestone RB2 "retro grouch" road bike. It has no remaining original component parts.
3. 1993 (or so) Marin Bear Valley SE beater bike. It also has no remaining original parts.
4. 1998 (or so) Porsche FS mountain bike. Shimanoized.
5. 1998 Santana Noventa road tandem. rear brake has been updated with a 10" disc.
6. Raleigh Technium mountain bike frame (198?) transformed into a 700c fixed gear.

No matter which bike I ride, I alwsys feel guilty that I haven't ridden one of the others a bit more. They're kind of like my kids. I know that 6 is too many but I can't figure out which one(s) I could bear to part with.

I have 2 bikes, the most I've ever had at one time in my life.

1 is a MTB I have had since new. A GT Timberline, 1989 vintage I think.
1 is a Road bike I have had for about 6 months. It's a Trek 1100.

I have just replaced both wheels and the bottom bracket, got it tunned up and rode it home about half an hour or so ago (the Trek).

Eight .... seven that are operational

1) Trek 5200
2) Trek T2000 Tandem
3) Cannondale Road Bike - 1987
4) Cannondale T1000 MT tandem
5) Bridgestone MB-1
6) Trek 630 - 1983
7) Cannondale Touring - 1990 - Note: Has fork damage from playing kissy face with the side of a Toyota station wagon. I walked away from the encounter with nothng more than a sore hand. The driver's only injury was a bloody nose and swollen eye that resulted in my sore hand. I keep the bike to remind me of three things: 1) I was very lucky 2) I have a short Irish temper 3) watch out for cars that speed by, slam on their brakes and take a right turn in front of you.
8) 1935 Elgin

okay, now this list is prolly not fully complete, but never having done this (a list) its really sortta an excercise for my memory...
before I start, the implication is obvious, I've been addicted sever since my 1st ride as an 8 yr old, which ended when I piled into a bunch of really gnarly rose bushes at the bottom of a hill.
roughly in chrono order
Balloon tire youth bike _ name no longer remembered
Royce Union 10 spd - brutal, unrefined, but mine - only thing I clearly remember is applying a checkboard sticker decal to make it truly a 'racer' - then I remember the front rings 52/49 - gear range, we don need no stinkin gear range!
Raleigh 10 spd - equivalent to Schwinn Conti - but still gaspipe
67 CCM 10 spd - Hoser Gaspipe with an okay ride
69? Dawes, I think 1st gen Galaxy - english Gaspipe with a nice ride
late 60's Browning Nervar equiped - french gaspipe with a nice ride
70 Peugeot PX10 - yeoman duty bike - my entry race bike
73 Fuji Newest (this was when I rode for the Northeast sponsored Fuji team) very old style roadrace design - solid frame, long wheelbase, bulletproof Suntour stuff
still own - 74 Fuji The ACE - 1st bike to sport Full DuraAce components, funky combo of 'new style' and Japanese concept of frame dims. TT is long enough to launch carrierbased F-14s
75? Fuji Professional - team stuff, very nice, the 1st of the really new concept frame dims.
still own - 76 Limongi Custom Crit 531 SL special tube set 19.5 lbs with Campy SR - nice, very nice, fast, fast, fast - really hairy and scary on any descents above 45+ mph. Really a flatlander - but fast
- 76 Paris Sport Trackie - stiff, steep, fast - great fun on the track
- 77 Gitane TDF - 531 - very nice allround roadie, but french threading
- 78 Motobecane Le Champ - really nice allround roadie, still hadn't learn my french thread lesson
- 78 Colnago Super - heaven on 2 whls, nothing it couldn't do well, sold to get an 80 super
- 76 Ramone Orero - one of few bought used - I think I loved this bike as much as the Super, sold it to a best friend ski racer, who also was the 1st to develop a MAJOR bike development - but that is another story
- 77 MKM - nice Brit crit bike - too steep, too high BB, typical late 70s overdesigned extreme roadie, sold after 6 mos of trying to tame it
- 79 Bob Jackson, not the Grand Prix, don't remember the 'model' name, was a one-off brought in for the bike show, absolutely gorgeous paint, rode like a dream, 1st bike I equipped in everything that Phil Wood had to offer at the time - BB, hubs... rest was Campy. I should never have sold this one... But sold to a Guy who paid me $200 more than I put into it... I wuz young and needed the cash to keep the habit goin.
- 78 Raleigh Professional MKII - the blue and silver one - incredibly nice, but much toooo big, the 60 cm was like riding a battleship - a very fast battleship but still very big
- 80 Ron Cooper - god, this was also a beauty, I hunted everywhere to find the matching silver Trackie, never found, sold to get a new Guerciotti...
still own - 80 Colnago Super - told this was a one-off special construct roadie which was never delivered to the intended rider - rumors of some designated pro... I couldn't resist. 1st gen Saronni paintjob, before we knew it as the Saronni paintjob. Think I have 50K miles on this machine, and counting...
still own - 83 Colnago Master - really didn't need another Colnago, but then I rode it. Where the Super waltz down any road, the Master is the ballerina, it rides on itz toes. It is Light, Ligthe and nimble like nothing else, nothing, even the carbons I tried and now bought into.
-82 Benotto Trackie - Italian construct, diamond shape chain and seattsays, new style min track dropouts - gawd what a track machine, road this for some years at Kissena and T-town
- 87 Moser - nice, great, not a Nago Master...
still own- 70? Colnago Track bike - supposedly also personally made by Ernesto for some guy, a track guy, good guy I heard - still own this machine, and rode the hell out of it during the 80s, at T-town. I'm quite certain I didn't ride it as well as the Guy it was originally made for.
- 82? Raleigh Comp GS - I bought this one to use as a 'travel' bike. For most of the late 70s and all of the 80s I did a ton of work related flying, need something that I could train on and set up quickly in a hotel room. This one was crunched by the Gorilla Baggage handlers from United
They bought me a
-85 Cannondale SR900 - Full Suntour Superbe. Awesome! StiFF! FAST! This bike keep me in Cat-2 even though I shoulda downgraded at this point. STIFF! FAST! A slab of aluminum! Hung on the garage wall until this past January - it's now my son's daily rider... Young guys, they LOVE STIFF, FAST!
He loves this bike!
late 80's - 2 Colnagos and you really don;t find much better to buy...
still own -86 Miyata trailRunner - my 1st MTB, full rigid (of course) cromo butted gaspipe, lotsa fun on the offroad and some great Zen rides with friends. Truly this was the bike that taught a roadie (me) that the 2 whl world is wide open and ready for anything. Still ride this EVERYDAY as my commuter.
still own - 91 Wanta custom for softride suspension - awesome ride idea, frame built by Al Wanta, a racer/builder who still plys his trade up in Santa Cruz. Want a custom frame? want personal attention, want a great ridin bike? contact Al via his website or call him in Santa Cruz CA. I love this bike. No longer UCI legal, but I did race this from 91 until end 97, when I stopped riding altogether until Sept 04.
recent stuff
still own - used 98 Trek 7300 MTB, front manitou fork, rigid rear - Shimano XTR, awesome MTB, will crawl up any singletrack as long as I can hang on and not dump it!
still own - 03 Torelli Corsa Strada - Columbus Brain Tubing, carbon fork - The total all-day road ride machine, extreme comfort in a roadrace package, Shimano WH550 wheelset - nice ride, but I wouldn;t write home about them.
still own - 02 Marin Treviso Columbus Neuron, WHOA! This is the NEU Steel. Awesome quick response, light, rides like an extreme racing dream. Only bike I've EVER owned that rivals (and exceeds) the CFolnago Master, it is THAT good! I'll be buried with this bike!
still own - 88 Titan - thanks to the cranky & vintage Forum on BF, I followed the thread on the Titans found on ebay. Seller put up an unblieveably bueatiful Purple and black swirl paintjob - I had to have it!
WHAT A FIND! After I built it up and rode it, turns out to be a nat's hair off from the Colnago Master. It is great! AND, it has a paintjob to die for! It IS the current garage queen! When I want to pose, this is the bike. At the local coffee stop, people will stop and just stand there, admiring it. Steel Bling...
2 weeks old - Specialized Tarmac Comp - 10 spd Shimao Ultegra, very nice bike, fast, solid, comfortable, yadda yadda yadda. It is a bit on the big side for me (58cm, but a compact). I shoulda gone with the 56 cm. This is a bit of a truck; not even close to rivaling the Master. I won't be riddin it again - its gonna get sold ASAP and I will get a Tarmac or equivalent in a 56cm.

So, I'm sure I missed some... Currently 10 machines, not counting the wife's bikes (3 more), wish I still had the Bob Jackson...

this was fun, rememberin some great ridin times...

I'll soon be getting a new beer-can-metal mountain bike with front suspension. I'll soon be selling the old tandem and the all purpose road bike. I'll be converting the rigid steel MTB into an all purpose road bike. Then there's my wife's cruiser and my son's road bike and mountain bike. I need one more. When I get it, I'll need one more.
