Bicycle Mechanics - Semi-Aero 28R/24F retro road wheels?

I posted yesterday on Classic and Vintage about 4 different 126mm 7speed wheelsets I'm considering.
One of them involved a Dura Ace 7400 7speed Uniglide rear cassette hub with 28 holes. I proposed doing a wheel build using Deep V/Semi-Aero DT Swiss RR 1.2. rims. This wheel build is just so tempting to do. I think I'd like to buy a 24 hole Ultegra hub and build the front wheel up with the 24 hole (Nashbar has these on sale for $19.99).
I weigh ~#235 right now, I'll be lower in weight next year.
Do you all think the 24 hole could hold up to my weight? Should I go with 28/28?
I'm not building the wheels myself. The mechanic at my local pro bike shop has a LOT of experience, and thought 28/28 would be more reliable, but 28/24 more "experimental".

Well... if the mechanic thinks 28 in the back is enough for you, then 24 up front should be fine. The front wheel typically experiences HALF the stresses of the rear wheel, as a rule of thumb. Frankly, I'm queasy about anything with less than 32 spokes, and I weigh 165 lbs. But I have a 28/28 wheelset that's worked great for me, so I guess I should be less paranoid.

If 28 in back is okay for you, then 24 up front should be okay.

By the way, you should consider replacing that 7speed Uniglide freehub body with a new 8/9/10 speed Hyperglide freehub body. They only cost about $20 when Nashbar has 'em and it's an easy replacement :)

I thought the older Dura Ace freehub body mounted differently and required a special puller (that you can't get anymore). Even if I could put and 8/9/10 freehub body on there, I would be back to messing with axle length and spacers again - something I'd rather not fool with for my 120/126 mm Masi rear triangle.

Oops... I missed the "old Dura Ace" part. Yeah, you'd have to rebuild with a new hub to upgrade this one I'm afraid. But if you're happy with 7-speed it sounds good.

I recently did something similar, building up a NOS 1980s 24h Record front hub but a new 28h Record rear hub (for my 9 speed) with Aerohead rims. Came out to a nice and light 1490g wheelset. Too bad the front rim collapsed, but the factory determined it was a defect and is rebuilding the wheels for me.

You might be thinking of the DT Swiss RR 1.1, the 1.2 that I'm discussing using comes in quite a few more drillings. Presumably it is considered stronger due to its aero profile.

Sorry, you're correct. The 1.2 is stiffer due to its deeper profile.

Dang it, I'm hearing far too many problems with the Aerohead rims lately and I"m planning on building a set up with H1 hubs in the spring. *grumble* :(

^ Well, the Velocity rep sounded truly concerned about the rim failing and wanted to inspect it to see what went wrong. I at least feel good that they are concerned over quality control, and trust that the pair they rebuilt for me will last. I didn't have any problems with my Deep Vs I had for years a while back.

thanks for the blessing on the 24 count.
I think I'll buy one of the Ultegra 6500 front hubs today to get this thing started.
(BTW, my Flyte SRS-3 is all done with the exception of the Flightdeck computer that I've ordered from my LBS).

masi61 - you're a lot closer to finishing than I am. I'm waiting for funds to come avaliable to continue collecting the parts I need. I'm just about dizzy from trying to decide on wheels for the Flyte myself. I'll have H1/Aeroheads on my Gazelle which will also be campy, so looking for a decent budget set of wheels that are under 1800g that will hold up but still look good.
