Commuting - Holy Schnikes!!

Biked in this morning during our "big" snowstorm. During the ride I'm getting slush spat at me from cars but as I pass people trudging through the snow I get thumbs up and people giving me a "way to go!". Tested my winter gear and some of it is inadequate in these conditions. Duly noted. :) Once on the bike trail I notice that there is only one other set of bike tracks. (there is someone out there like me!) Feeling good about the ride, the fixed gear proved to be much more controlled and I arrive at my work. I work with kids. One kid looks at me with disgust and says "why do you ride your bike in the snow?"

I say, "why not?".

He says "You need to get a car" in his most disgusted voice.

I just smile and keep on banging the inch of slush of the drive train.

Man it was a good ride. :)

I've gotten a couple "Get a car!" hollers before.
My standard comback is "I've got a car. It's at home. Get a bike!"

I didn't make it to the bike trail. Got run off the road and bent my crank. Had to bus it the rest of the way. :(

I made it half way to work, though. (Made it 7 miles)

Had a great time till I wiped out, though. :) :)

Kid needs to get a new attitude!

i work with young kids! i park my bike where you can see it from the building, and i guess the kids in the other class are fascinated by it. anyway, one of the kids (a 5-year-old) in my class asked me about my bike, and said "you should drive a car." i asked him why and he said "you should drive a car." i laughed. i think he thought i should drive a car because grown-ups drive cars and i'm a grown-up (and teachers live in their classrooms and don't go to the movies or the grocery store, etc.).

Yeah, it's cute when kids get their first eye-opening freak-out, as they realize the rest of the world is nothing like the little sphere they've been growing up in. The world is a certain way, and people who don't conform to that way are either weird or damaged.

I rode yesterday on my singlespeed (converted Centurion) and next time will go with the fixie (or mountain bike). My brakes (old sidepulls) sucked in that snow - maybe new pads would help. Otherwise maybe go with more aggressive tires (studs?) to barrel through the plowed snow piles. Also got splattered with a lot of slush as cars sped by, especially the big SUV's. Those tall tires throw up a lot of stuff. Luckily I was mostly on bike path. And there were at least two sets of tracks before mine in my neck of the woods - before 8am! That's Boulder, as tough as you think you are there's always someone tougher.
