Hi all,
a friend of mine is looking to spruce up the braking of his lovely old cannondale tourer. He is thinking about swapping the dia compe xct canti's for a newer model, as the old ones probably need new pads, and definitely need new cables etc (in fact, his brakes need a big overhaul).
What budget canti's would you recommend?
Ones that can be sourced from an LBS would be good too. I have seen Tektro 862 and Shimano Altus brakes for about $30 a pair (he is also considering the nashbar ones at 15$ per pair).
Thanks!

I just bought some Tektro Oryx cantis from bicyclesupply on ebay for $29.85 plus shipping. That is, you get front and rear brakes for that price, not just one brake. They use v-brake type shoes, with spherical washers for easy adjustment, and you center them like v-brakes too. They're nice looking cantis-

I'm also very happy with the Tektro Oryx cantis that I installed recently. I got mine from JensonUSA, front and rear for $16. They are far superior to what I expected at that price, and I think they're still available.

That's $16 per brake, right?

The Nashbar Deluxe Canti's are the same brake as the oryx, but even with them on sale right now at nashbar the ebay dealer is 10 bucks a set cheaper. I've got them on my LHT and they work fine, easy to adjust, I've had no squealing issues with them. Tough to beat for 29.95 and shipping.

Yeah, and this seller (bicyclesupply) is excellent, shipping is very reasonable, they will combine shipping on items to give lower shipping rates. I received the item two days after I paid for it. And it's a "buy it now" item, so you don't have to go through the bidding process. I also bought some Cane Creek SCR-5 levers ($26.95 per pair) from them at the same time-
