Commuting - Just lost a bike today, needed a new one

I lost the bike Giant OCR3 today, I bought it 3 years ago for about $400. I don't regret it much though, because I had been in an car accident one,and recently, it constantly give me flat tire (I check the tire, everything's till good, just bad luck).

Now I'm not looking for a road bike anymore, rather than a commuting bike such as mountain one, since it's very rarely to get flat tire due to its big size. I read the articel from bicycle magazine few months ago, they nominated a bike which has everything for around $500, but I forgot the name.

Anyone can recommend me a good one (online is fine if it's on sale)? I've been searching Craigslist for a while now, I prefer used-bike that one sale rather than brand new one. Thanks so much.

Anyway, are you looking for something like a flat handle bar road bike with skinny tires?

Have you considered a cyclocross or touring bike? Both have clearance for wider tires, and some cross bikes come w/ fender and rack eyelets.

Someone stole it but it was totally my fault, I left it outside without lock, and got warning already so I can't blame anyway but me.

Touring bike is the one that I'm aiming to, I hate road bike now, I get flat tire at least once a week, so no more road bike. I checked out local Bay Ridge store and they had a Fuji bike for $300 with disc brake system. But I want something better, not sure what to take.

Disc brakes are nice. I have a bike from Giant called the OCR Touring, its basically a road bike with disc brake. I'm running 700x28 tires and haven't had much problems with flats. Perhaps you're riding too close to the side of the road where all the glass is?

Was it a Novara (REI) bike? I remember there were Novaras nominated in that issue. Don't remember which models, though.

I recently saw something about a diamond back transporter (http://www.diamondback.com/items.asp?deptid=20&itemid=228) too. It looks decent but doesn't have disc brakes.

Your solution to flats is not a different wheel size but a different tire. Marathon Plus tires come in sizes to fit most bikes and are extremely tough. Cheap or high performance road tires are very prone to flats under commuting conditions but there is a number of much tougher tires in the 700c size.
