Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I salvaged an early 70's Dawes Galaxy (Reynolds 531) steel frame to undertake my first rebuild. The headset has been badly mistreated resulting in serious damage to the steer tube thread. Can a one inch steel steer tube be replaced without compromising strength? What is the best way to go about it? Should I move to a threadless headset for ease of manufacture? Or should I keep looking for another frame or forks in better condition. The reason a steel frame appeals to me is because it can be repaired.

I would let some one with lots of experience replace that.
I always pray on fast descents that the fork wasn't made on a MONDAY!;)
Cuz if you F it up, you'll find out about it in the WORST possible way!
