Since 1966, most of the United States has observed Daylight Saving Time from at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of April to 2:00 a.m. on the last Sunday of October. Beginning in 2007, most of the U.S. will begin Daylight Saving Time at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday in March and revert to standard time on the first Sunday in November. In the U.S., each time zone switches at a different time.

In the European Union, Summer Time begins and ends at 1:00 a.m. Universal Time (Greenwich Mean Time). It begins the last Sunday in March and ends the last Sunday in October. In the EU, all time zones change at the same moment. (http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/b.html)

School girls on the way to school in Detroit were getting raped because it was dark, so they say thats a good reason to keep daylight savings time. Why not just change the god damn school schedule? Why mess with everyone? Daylight savings time has always pissed me off.

I should have posted this in the commuters forum. They are a lot like me and will notice this more than most will. Usually around mid march we are getting to the point here where you can just about hang up the lights in the morning, meaning you won't need them on your early AM ride.

What this means to those that ride early is, we will have another season of late sunrise. Right now (right before standard time starts), and around the first of January used to be the latest times for sunrise. It was all uphill from there. Now just when we are starting to have civil twilight around 6:45 AM in early March, the switch to daylight saving time will mean several more weeks of using lights as civil twiglight will again be at it's latest, around 7:45 AM.

So thus we get THREE seasons of late civil twilight. End of October, Late Dec./Early Jan, and then again in March when the time changes again. Crap!

Pretty soon it'll be pitch black on the 5pm commute home. Without DLST kids would be going to school in the dark. This way at least it's not dark in both commutes. Imagine a whole winter in your office never seeing the sky or light from mon-fri.

In the Arctic the 24 hours of light is pretty screwy.

The funny thing is that I might. But not over daylight, I just want a job after I graduate.

Personally I'd not complain if they extended the period of time for which Summertime was operating in the UK.

There were loud complaints during the Carter administration when DST was extended in response to America's first energy crisis. I thought it was a pretty sound idea. To stretch it further seems excessive.

Canada followed the USA in extending DST but there has been some debate in the press over whether they will follow any further extension. Europe is not going to change because of the USA. In addition to a longer spell of dark winter mornings, such a change will put us out of synch with some important neighbors.

I don't know if changing all the US time zones at once according to the European model is such a good idea; but the change is in the middle of the night--say one o'clock in New York and three o'clock in Seattle, with Alaska and Hawaii in their own personal limbo--so the effect should be minimal one way or the other.

????

It is dark when they GO TO school so keep daylights savings? That is a reason to end daylights savings time. More hours of light in hte evening means less light in the morning.

It has been noticed for years the the ending of daylight savings is a bit nasty. It ends just in time for Halloween. Drivers that would have returned home in hte light (or at least twilight) now return in the dark with kids out on the street. I think the one week change at the end makes sense.

Tom and Ray (aka Click and Clack) from Car Talk had a great idea. Double-Dog Daylight Savings. Every day, we leap forward from 3pm to 4pm, and every night at 2am, we fall back. No loss of light in the morning or evening, one less hour of work, and one more hour of sleep.

I'd be all for it. :D

As to the original question. I don't care. It isn't light enough now or in late March after work to do anything without lights. Extending DST isn't going to change having to put lights on the bike to ride after work, and that's about the only effect it would have on me.

YOu are close to me, since i am in Kansas. Actually when DST starts in March, sunset here will be at 7:43 PM instead of 6:34PM. That should give you an extra hour unless you work really late. For most people this would be a big benefit in the evening.

YOur sunset and sunrise times appear to be the same as mine pretty much.

I dislike DST. It is very depressing in December when the sunset is 3:00, by 4 I can see the stars. No chance at all for any ride after school or work.

The one advantage I see however, is that I wake up easier due to more natural light in the morning. Sadly though, it's just not worth it for the tradeoffs.

The whole country should be on UTC time with no daylight switch. One time for everyone. What the hell is so hard about that?
Daylight saving is just another example of congress wasting time and money on trivial (but attention getting) rubbish. rather than making us spin the hands around on our clocks twice a year. You can not create time or save sunlight, stop pretending you can!

Farmers for example get up when the cows need milking, whether the clock's big hand is pointing at 3am or 4am dosen't matter, cows don't use clocks.

It's not that big of a deal when you're in Cali and the weather is great
But when you're in NY shoveling snow as soon as you get home from work or school
That sh*t SUCKS. Give me more daylight in the winter!

Ever been inside your grandmothers house with the heat set to like 85 degrees
You cannot help but get tired and depressed. Same thing with early nightfall in the cold winters.
