Hi all - 1st post.

Just got what I think was a great deal on a bike. 2002 Trek Hilo 2000 frame, 105 drivetrain, dura ace shifters, syntace aero bars, icon sterling series stem, icon onyx series seat post, wtb speed V sport saddle, 105 clipless pedals, nike stelvio shoes, gloves, etc. all for $850 total.

Only question I have - I got it with Matrix Aurora Wheels (650s) and IRC Triathlon tires. I was attempting to mimic the 2002 Trek Hilo 1000 set up, but from trek, that bike comes with Bontrager Select Wheels.

It is my 1st road bike - gonna use it for some tri's. I can't find any info or company website, etc. on the Matrix Aurora Wheels. I notice that Trek uses those (Matrix Aurora) wheels on its $1,000ish road bikes, but the Bontrager Select wheels on its $1,500ish bikes.

Is there much of a difference? Will a newbie like myself realize any difference? Anything I need to look out for?

Any info would be appreciated.

I haven't had any problems with mine (700C), but I've only had mine for about 100 miles so far. I friend of mine has the same wheels, and they seem pretty decent; he has about 2000 miles on his without any problems. They have an off center rear rim, which is neat, it makes for a stronger wheel b/c there is less dish.

as for the bontrager selects, I haven't heard any specific complaints, but I am a tad weary of the low spoke-count wheels. If it goes out of true, it would be awfull hard to pull it back true. theres my 2 cents.

Don't know much about the auroa rims. The Selects believe it or not are outstanding. They stay in true, very strong, light and fast. All the shops I ask about them {even if they don't sell them** say that they are surpised just how good they really are, becuase they had their doubts about them too. Of course there are better wheels out there, but not for the money. Good value.

The Matrix rims are Trek's house brand much like Coda is for Cannondale.

Trek uses them on lower spec'ed bikes in their lineup.

I have had no problems with them in the past, but there are lighter, better wheelsets out there.
