Foo - Can't prove there's unemployment by me. A work rant.

I have a job opening. By law I have to hire through the state employment service if possible. So far I've had one call. She called Monday but just couldn't make it in to fill out an application until today (Friday). She was supposed to be here at 9:00. She showed at noon. She apologized and said she's "Just not a morning person". This jobs hours are 6:00 to noon. Won't be too good for someone who can't get here until noon. It's for a part time janitorial position three days a week that pays $9.50 an hour plus they put about $3.00 an hour in a 401K for you. There must not be any hungry people in OKC.

I feel much better now. Now if 5:00 will just get here so I can go have a beer and dinner I'll be fine.

actually, i'm not surprised. my GF was in charge of hiring people at her job and many people scheduled interviews and then just didn't even bother to show up or call when they were supposed to be there.

Hire an illegal alien. S/he won't be taking a job from someone that wants to work so it's no big deal.

No wonder no one's applying, you're paying way, way too much for a janitor's position...

Most I can't hire due to the level of security checks required (this is a high security facility, guite a bit of classified stuff around). This time I've had zip.

The market has definitely changed in the last 18 months where I am. I hire administrative support staff in a behavioral healthcare agency, and the applicants are no longer unemployed people looking for work. They're now either already employed and looking to change jobs or have zero office experience. We can't hire decent floaters at all. We currently have a floater pool of 1 for an 18 office organization. I hired an administrative assistant who quit with no notice. She hadn't stopped looking for a new job even after I hired her. I work with this program director who had to recruit out of state to hire her 3 clinical supervisors. For a local community nonprofit, it's highly unusual.

Well, for part time, those hours will probably be hard to fill. If they were 6pm to 12am, I'd bet a lot more people would apply, not because they aren't morning people, but because they probably work full time.

I'm sure making 171 a week is definitely better than nothing, but why bother getting a part time job when you're activily seeking a full time? Probably be better off canning the 401k and adding some of that to the wage.

Out of curiosity how long before the employee is fully vested in the 401? Is it on a sliding percentage? Two years = 20% etc...

BTW I would of told the applicant that the interview time had passed and I'm sorry but he/she will have to reschedule the appication/interview for a later date. Why reward someone for their tardiness.

401k? is that the only benefit? What are the odds of anyone retiring from this job????? or this company even?
Other posters are right, people need full time employment at a fair wage, this position isn't drawing much attention because it's not very attactive, not because the workforce are a bunch of slackers!
or because the State Employment Dept are losers. Take some responsibility here.

Greg200 is right, this 401k is actually a non-benefit that goes back to the company when the worker leaves for a full time job.
