Road Cycling - Pedals: Look vs. Ritchey vs. Shimano...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

OK, I know there are several threads on this topic and my apologies if this specific question has been asked before, but for basic road riding, which pedal would you choose?

Look FQV or Look PP206 or Look 337

Shimano SPD-R535 or Shimano PD-6601

Ritchey Pro Logic

None of the above...

All about the same price point...

It's definately a personal choice. I have campagnolo record pedals, there are similar to looks. You will get 10 different people that like 10 different pedals.

I don't know about the Shimanos, but I can write about the Ritchey Pro Logic and the LOOK 337 with some expertise. Forget about the Ritcheys and buy the LOOKs. Yopu can get the 337s for $50 from Colorado Cyclist the last time I looked.

Why? you might ask. My bike came with the Ritcheys (why do decent companies, like Bianchi, put SPD pedals on lower level road bikes? Makes no sense.) The small size of the pedal and the cleat give you little of the support you need. If the sides of your feet tend to press down on the outside like so many do, the small cleat puts a lot of stress on the sole of the shoe and will damage it. The set up can also damage your body. While I used the Ritcheys on my road bike I constantly had knee pain and hip pain. Once I got into the LOOK 337s these pains went away overnight. So that's my evidence.

You'll be happier with road pedals on a road bike.

For me it's Look pedals or at least look compatible pedals. My K2 came with some Ritchey pedals and I just couldn't get used to them. The shop swapped them for some Look compatible pedals and I've been very happy with them.

From experience and the way Shimano and Ritchey are treating dealers I say go with the Look or Campagnolo pedals.
