My ride report -
This was my first organized ride, so I was nervous and scared. I wasn't able to get much sleep as my 10-month old is teething again, so I was pretty damn tired when I woke up and didn't really feel lke riding. Luckily, fellow BFers were doing this ride, and for that I am ever grateful. I pulled into the parking lot into the open space next to PBryant1/Tiffanie's kiddy mobile, and proceeded to registration and gearing up. And off we went.
The first 18 or so miles were uneventful, with an occasion hill or two. Nothing too much to worry about. The ride was listed as a "hilly century" so I was hoping that was it. Wrong I was. Going up one of the newly paved hills before "The Big One" (as I've come to affectionately call Oak Glen), a random girl rode up next to me and asked how I was doing. I told her I was huffing and puffing up the hill, and she dutifully told me that "It gets worse." Great - looking forward to it . . .
And she was right. It got a lot worse. Thankfully Brandy/Tiffanie/Paul were kind enough to wait up for me ever so often as my slow ass began to grind up Oak Glen. In my granny gear. You read that right - my pride was out the window. Brandy and I stopped at a Staters Bros. to get some water as we were running low. A little while later, SAG passed by and we bummed some water off of them. Brandy and Tiff rode ahead as I grinded it out with Paul. We stopped to catch a breather, and I unclip my left foot like I normally do, but as I was rolling slowly uphill, I tried to get my balance and leaned to the right. There I go - up over the asphalt curb, and sliding down a dirt drop-off. I had visions in my head of rolling/flopping down a major hill to be left for dead. But I may have slid down 5 feet or so. Got up, noticed the rash/bruise/cuts on the side of my lower right leg, but I was more embarassed than anything. Brushed off, caught my breath, and resumed grinding. Paul was ahead, and I was getting pretty damn tired - legs were ok, but I just did not have the cardio fitness. I noticed that I was losing mental focus on riding - saw some loose gravel on the side of the road - and lo and behold, my body/bike headed straight for it. Caught the loose gravel, slid down on my left side - thankfully Paul was a little ways up and didn't see. Man - two falls in the span of 10 minutes. I wanted to plop down on my side and die at that point in time.
Paul and I decided to call SAG for the last few miles to hitch a ride - but after I got a hold of them, we were informed that one of the SAG cars were out tending to a down rider and the other was out of cell range. I was way too pooped - and the hill looked too steep. So I got off my bike and started walking. We walked the last 1.5 miles to the rest stop, where chimivee, Tiffanie, and Brandy were graciously awaiting. 3:20 for the first 30 miles - boy was I hauling! (note the sarcasm)
Fueled up, and off we went. Brandy had an unfortunate incident/flat, and the ever-so chivalrous James went to assist her. I felt extremely bad/guilty for this, as they had so graciously waited for me time and time again, but I had to bid my goodbyes and head down myself as I had tickets to the UCLA/Washington State football game which started at 4pm, and I had to try to salvage whatever would be left of the game. Descended down the mountain, riding the brakes, got to Oak Valley Pkwy/San Timoteo Canyon, where I tried to make up some lost time. The road surface wasn't the best, especially considering my aluminum frame, but it was a nice quiet stretch - just me and the road and the occasional car. And the train - just as I was approaching the tracks, the guardrails came down. I saw the train at a fair distance, and it looked long. I thought seriously about making a go for it - but then remembered how had fallen twice already, and knowing my luck I'd trip over the tracks and get my pedal stuck in it with my foot or something. So I waited, and waited, and finally got rolling again.
10 miles to go or so, back on the busier city streets, I felt like I hit a wall or something. I had been eating along the way, but I was just running out of gas. I felt like a zombie that just had to spin my legs. I wish that time allowed me to wait for the BFers to pull me along - it's a scary feeling being extremely exhausted in an unknown place all alone. Once again, I had the desire to plop over to the side and die. But I had come this far, and I couldn't wuss out now. (That's sort of a lie - while I wasn't going to purposely call SAG, if a SAG car came coming by and offered a ride, I would have paid 5 bucks to get in). ;) I finally got back to the starting point, loaded up the car and got right on my way.
The stats and aftermath:
Total ride distance: 67.14 miles
Total ride time: 5:20.12
Nothing to call home about, but I don't care - it was my first organized ride, and I'm just glad that I'm still alive. My arms/legs/face are a little burned from the sun, but it's ok as I needed some color. The rash/cuts on my leg weren't too bad after I washed away the dirt. Both my buttcheeks hurt, and my neck/back are a little stiff. I have a callous in between my thumb/index finger where I wedge my hands while riding the hoods.
But enough complaining. All in all, I had a great time, and feel a certain sense of accomplishment. Many thanks go to chimivee, PBryant1, Tiffanie, Brandy, Karen, etc. for being such great people to ride with, and so nice and helpful in waiting for someone as slow as me. A heartfelt apology for having to take off early, and not being able to say goodbye to chimivee as well. We managed to get to the game right at halftime, but I wasn't really into it as I was quite tired. I'll be sleeping well tonight. ;)
Sorry this is so long, but I felt like it was an adventure for me today. When I feel like torturing myself again, I'll do another metric. :p
Great report Luwin! I saw you in the distance on San Timoteo Canyon and tried to chase you down. :p I was closing in (near the train) and turned back and James, Tiff and Paul were nowhere to be seen, so I stopped in the shade on that curve and waited for them. I eventually turned back to see where they were and found them down the road, Paul had a slow leak. So anyway...I tried to catch you!!! :p
Great job on your first organized ride! :D

Omigosh Luwin, that's a GREAT ride report!
On San Timoteo, we think we were catching up to you and Brandy started haulin' butt to try to catch you but then we had to stop as Paul had a tire that needed tending to.
I'm sorry you had such a tough ride. It was definitely that... tough. But you stuck it out and made it through! Yeah!

Still missing Paul's report.:(
OK, here it is. This ride kicked my arse, But i was proud that i finished.:D It was my longest ride to date with the most climbing. i think James calculated it at around 4800 ft. I should have bought a triple. I got 3/4 of the way up the climb before i thought my heart was going to pop out of my chest. Both Lewin and I decided we were going to bring the HR rate down a bit and took a little walk;) for about a mile once we saw a curvy steep grade. I need to work on my Core a little bit more because during our brief walk, my back stiffened up bad. I kept saying to myself, "No Pain, No Gain.... Just Do It!!!" Once we felt a liitle better, we got back on the bikes and made it to the rest stop. :) The decent and San Timeteo Cayon section were amazing:D What goes up, must come down. As was mentioned by everone else, the last 10 miles were a tough one. For me personally, my back was hurting so bad, that it made it tough for me to breath properly, so the love of my life hung back with me and pulled me to the finish. Thanks babe!!!;)
All said, I have been only riding for a month and am glad that i did this. :D This group of people are fantistic to ride with and will only make me a stronger rider. :) Thanks Tiff, Brandy, James, and Lewin for hangin' with me.
Great pics!!! I look forward to the next ride.

My ride report -
Thanks for the detailed report Luwin. It was great riding with you - You did absolutely awesome on your first metric! This was not an easy one, and the climb up Oak Glen was brutal. We were ALL suffering getting to the top. In retrospect, I wish I had hung back and ridden with you guys up... but I was focused on getting to the rest stop, and downing some much needed food and water.
The last 10 miles were tough for us as well. Just monotony really. And yes, Brandy was in full afterburner mode trying to catch you, on San Timoteo before we stopped for Paul's flat.
I hope overall it was still a good experience, and that you come back for more. :D

I agree! We actually need to plan this as a group ride when it's cooler outside and knock off some of the yucky suburban riding. I wonder how much we can cut out and still keep San Timoteo Canyon in the ride? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Man, not sure how long it took to take care of the Brandy tire situation, but I must be turtle-slow!!! Good thing you had to turn back, Brandy - who knows what kind of blow to my already shattered ego you would have caused had you caught up to me!! j/k :p Great pics, btw, and thanks for the water - you know I got your back next time. Heck, because you were so nice to a newbie like me, your next Todai dinner's on me. :)
James - great pics too! You've got major bike/camera skills, and are a nice guy to boot. I had a good time chatting with you briefly during the ride.
And Paul/Tiff - it's a blast riding with you guys - next year, we'll be hauling up Oak Glen!!! OK, maybe just you guys - and you two will be on a tandem or something. :p
I echo the sentiments about the last 10 miles. I would see a stoplight approaching, and think to myself, "That BETTER be Alabama or else I'm going to open up a can of whoop ass on someone! What?? California?? Where the hell is Alabama??" And I would have to focus on riding on the broken pavement and at times imagined that I was riding on a beautiful cobblestone road somewhere in France or something - there was one time when I was drinking on the fly and hit a pretty big pothole - scared the bejeezus out of me!
And confession time . . . while you took Brandy's wheel back to the rest stop to see if they had a spare tire, I asked Brandy if her bike was an 8 or 9 speed . . . because I honestly considered just letting her borrow my rear wheel/tire, and I'd take hers and SAG all the way back to the starting point. :o I figured the only way I could live with myself bailing out on a ride was to look like I was doing it to help someone out!!

Luwin...you're too sweet. You don't owe me anything, I was glad that you came out to ride and the water was no big deal...it's just how the BF people roll. :p
Oh...and don't worry about your confession. There was more than one time that I considered throwing in the towel, but the important part is that we all made it!
So...I just threw this together really quickly to get an idea of elevation and mileage if we try to plan a ride that includes Oak Glen and San Timoteo Canyon. Disclaimer...I have no idea where we would park/start or what Live Oak Road looks like. :D Some of us could pre-ride it or drive it first though! :)

It is full of potholes and bumps in a few sections. Not much of a shoulder either, but that doesn't stop us locals from riding it (Though I haven't been that way in a while.).
You could probably park at Angel's Roadhouse, just off the Live Oak Canyon Rd. exit in Yucaipa. Though, I wouldn't take my word for it w/o first checking with the owners.
There's also a bike shop, Cycletek, just west of there, on the frontage road along the 10. You could probably park in the parking lot there, but that'd add a trivial amount of climbing back to the cars.
You could also just ride from Redlands and skip the Greenspot Rd. loop (the road with the old bridge). Instead, just head straight up the 38 from Redlands and come back through San Timoteo it's only about 45 miles that way. You wouldn't be missing much by skipping Live Oak Canyon.

Great report Luwin, I felt just like that after my first metric. Congrats on completing a tough ride.:D

Another great report, and I do believe your first. Great ride and congrats on completing yoour first century. By the way, you wont need a triple. Just gotta get used to riding the double and how to keep the HR under control. You will be a strong rider, just keep chasing sdown your woman.:p
I knew that! :p I was going to edit it but got distracted. My only concern is wondering if Live Oak Canyon Road is full of potholes and bumps like that one section of San Timoteo Canyon was. Maybe we need to plan a scouting mission. :D
I love replying to myself. :D I was just thinking that we should make sure to check this out on the way to or back from Joshua Tree, since we'll go right by there and that section of Live Oak Canyon Road is right off of the 10. Maybe we can find a nice meeting spot around there as well.

Great job everyone...
Especially Paul and Lewin on your first Metric...way to go....there is no shame in having to get off and walk a bit...I still do sometimes!
I know it must have been really dry and hot there...we did a 50 miler yesterday and I went thru 2 24oz bottles and my 72oz camelbak....

I've been trying to get caught up on this thread and instead of posting 20 times, I'll just keep it brief. Great ride report, Luwin, and all the various additions. :) It sounds like you guys had a challenging ride and a blast. The pictures are great, all of you look fabulous on your wheels, and you couldn't have beat the weather even if it was a little warm (how lucky are we southern californians that we have this kind of weather at the END of October!). I'm going to consider this ride next year. :D

LOL...funny how our perspectives differ m.e. All day I was saying...IT'S OCTOBER!!! IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THIS FU*KING HOT!!!!   :roflmao: :roflmao:
Did you see the horsie pics I took for you? When he/she(???) came over I thought of you and how much you would have enjoyed it.
I'm going to consider this ride next year. :D
I really think that as a group (especially if we had someone willing to drive SAG), we could plan a better route...leaving out all of the suburban crapola. We'll have to do this one soon!
