View Full Version : OCW Fall Metric Thread - AGAIN

Since the original thread seems to be broken...
A couple people received emails from Joe with OCW, who was up in the area most of the day today, and drove the route. Said it was clear, no smoke, no high winds.
So Me, Brandy, Tiffanie, and Paul are going to give it a go. Hope to see the others there. If the smoke is an issue when we get there, we'll just turn around and call it a road trip... or go eat a fancy breakfast.

THREE! Oh...I'm sorry...that would be two blowouts and an encounter with a stick. :o My brake pad on one side was rubbing on the back tire and wore a nice little hole. I'm forever traumatized by the noise! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v372/BrandyMama/drama.gifhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v372/BrandyMama/rotfl.gif Thankfully James fixed all three flats for me. What the heck?! I was waiting for someone to pick me up!
Okay...aside from the flats, I have to report that this ride was very challenging. Many factors (very little sleep coupled with even less food this week and having been back on the bike for a mere three weeks after two months off) and this ride nearly did me in. I thought more than once about calling the SAG wagon because I didn't think I could take anymore climbing, but my pride (or stupidity...you choose) got the best of me and I refused to give up. My saving grace was rider #88 who I paced myself behind when I couldn't keep up with Tiff without blowing my heartrate through the roof. He was cruising at the perfect pace for me and if he hadn't been in front of me, I probably would have thrown in the towel a couple of miles before the rest stop.
After the rest stop we had an amazing downhill into Beaumont and then some crosswinds for a couple of miles before we turned onto San Timiteo Canyon where the tailwinds kept our speeds up. Those were my two favorite sections. :D
So...I survived...just barely. :D :p

It was definitely challenging. A few spots had me wishing for just one lower gear. But I pushed through and made it to the rest stop. As Brandy mentioned, the downhill and tailwind sections were fantastic!! Definitely my favorite part of the ride. :D
James, the kind soul that he is, waited for us at the rest stop. He ended up having quite a bit of time off the bike since he then had to wait for us to get some food in our bellies. But he did without complaint, as well as change all the flats. Thank you James!!!!
We saw caligurl at check-in, but she was off before we were even ready to go. Also met and rode a little bit with Kar3368 and her husband Tony. It was nice to finally meet you Karen!

The route was mostly awesome. Some really good ass-kicking climbing up into Oak Glen (beautiful), then a blazing descent down the other side, followed by continous 25-30+ MPH tail-winded flat crusing on Timoteo Cyn. Unfortunately, the heat during the climb made that section tough. And the last 10 mi through suburbia was a bit miserable. In cooler weather, I think this would be an excellent ride.
The SAG stop was very good. BUT, with the heat, the one and only rest stop was too far away. It came at about the 30 mi mark, at the top of a long 10 mi. climb. On a warm day like today, 2 bottles wasn't enough to make it there, at least for some of us. To their credit, roving SAG was handing out water... I was lucky to get some just as I ran out. Again, the actual SAG stop was pretty good, with an assorment of PBJs, cookies, fruit, gatorade, water, etc. The area (Los Rios Rancho) had shade trees, picnic table, lots of grass, and real restrooms.
Thanks to Scott for giving us a replacement tire for Brandy's POS :p bike.
Here I test out James' crouching photographer, hidden camera technique on Tiff :p

+1 on the miserable suburbia area. That was a very long 10 miles.
SAG arrived with perfect timing. We were all out of water and ready to call it quits when we see SAG pull up next to us. I went through 7 water bottles today!

good job! it was great seeing everyone at the ride start... and i got to finally meet paul and luwin! this ride always seems to be an "old home ride" cuz i also got to chat with a bunch of other cycling friends, too (non bikeforums bike friends).... tom & sue, sylvia & fred (both on their tandems), OCRR's linda and jimmy.... (i actually spent longer at the rest stop than i wanted to cuz i ended up chatting there, too!)
i waited around at the end for about 2.5 hours waiting for you guys to come back in so i could say "hey".... but i finally had to leave....
oh brandy.... you didn't mention you won a $25 JAX gift certificate... so perhaps they didn't tell you when you got back? they drew the names while i was sitting around talking and waiting!
i love this ride.... it's one of my favorites... probably cuz it was my first ever organized ride.... it was a gorgeous day and being a desert rat.... i thought the temps were perfect! but it's all about what you are used to! i LOVED the tailwinds coupled with the slight downhill on san timoteo.... it was just FUN! i was disappointed that the pie was from costco and not los rios rachos like it was the last two years.... but i ate it anyways.... too much of it.... i chose pie over the dried out pizza!
i've decided that next time i decide to drive myself to a ride... i need to come home straight after and not go shopping..... (although i did get a really cute "wear to rides in the morning" warm up suit) i was getting tired by the time i got home.... so i'll leave the shopping for when hubby's doing the driving! (oh.... and i stopped at super walmart to buy a whole bunch of bottles of my favorite cheap wine!)
i took some pics of the pretty scenery but haven't even looked at them yet... much less uploaded them.... but once i do i'll post them if you want to see them!
