Bicycle Mechanics - Wellgo Cleat Instructions

Hello, I bought a pair of Wellgo SPD cleats on eBay and they didn't come with an instruction sheet for installation. Is there any place online where I can find an instruction sheet for dummies.

The thing I can't figure out is why the screws are so long. Do I need spacers? or do I need to cut the hardened machine screws (not likely) Or maybe I'm just doing something wrong.

Any and all help will be appreciated.

Got it figured out. Just one more thing... does the spacer go on the inside of the shoe or the outside?

I'm not familiar with these specific cleats, but in general, there are spacers or shims that are optional and can be used between the shoe and the cleat, to make the cleat stand out a bit more from the sole of the shoe, to enhance the ease of engagement and/or release in some instances. You might try them first without the shim, to see if you need it, unless you're pretty sure already. Be sure to keep the screws snug and check them often, but don't overtighten, because the threaded holes in your shoe soles can strip if overtightened.

Thanks lawkd, That helps. Even with the shims, my screws are too long. They stick up above the fastener by at least 1/8th inch. I must have the wrong screws for my shoes (Specialized). They are kind of old. Maybe the standards have changed. The screws look like really hard steel. Im sure they would be hard to cut. Maybe I could grind them to the right length. I do have a 6" Delta grinder :-)

Hmm, that does sound like you have the wrong screws. They shouldn't be very long at all, and these are clearly too long from the sound of it. If you have a good relationship with your LBS, you might ask if they've got spare cleat screws that you could try (and buy). They probably have lots of them around, as do most people who've been riding clipless for a while, since the screws last longer than the cleats. But you do have a grinder, and really, it's a "why not" sort of thing. So if the threads on these are correct but they're just too long, sure, what the heck! Grind on 'em for a bit! Just make sure to remove burrs so you won't damage your screw holes in your shoes. That's the main thing.

Grinding sounds like an option. Going to the local fastener shop with the bolts and $1 in hand is another.
