if your budget is so tight you're concerned about the cost of a cog, you probably don't have the money to build a conversion in the first place.
all the same, though, if you're looking for deals, check ebay or your lbs's used parts bin.

All I need is the cog and a lock ring, and my current set-up will be good to go.

$25 will get you a DA cog.
Exactly, and a cheap new cog will probably just chew your hub.

Soma cogs are $20 at Nashbar. Some people seem to think they are sub par for reasons I have never heard articulated, but in my experience they are pretty nice, and certainly adequate for an inexpensive cog.

I have had good luck with the no-name spicer cog. I think it is less than $10, I got it when I was jobless and haven't found a need to replace it now that I have a job...

Fast/cheap shipping, awesome customer service.
has anyone tried these and had a bad experience?

Unfortunately they seem to want $17 to ship an item to Canada that would honestly cost less than <$2. Damn online retailers always like to rip on shipping.

Yeah I don't quite understand it. Domestic shipping from states to state is like $6 or whatever, and that goes to the north reaches of United States. As soon as it crosses the border by 1m in shipping is 3x that amount? :|
