Commuting - Tights vs. Track pants: Any advantages?

So with the chilly weather starting to settle in, my thoughts are turning towards keeping my booty and legs from freezing off on the way in to work. At the moment, I'm just wearing a pair of track pants over my shorts and hitting the road, but I'm wondering if there's any real advantage to wearing tights instead.

So far, the scoreboard seems to be:

Track pants:
+ I already own a couple of pair
+ They seem to work fine
- The one pair have loose cuffs and require me to strap them to my leg

Tights:
- I'd have to buy some
+ I'd get to buy me some new "toys", um, er... I mean necessary equipment
+ They will frame and highlight the shape of my booty for everyone to see

Hmmm... come to think of it, that last one might just be a minus.

So, does anyone have anything else to add to the scoreboard that'll help me out here?

Tights are more aero and breathe better than my track pants.

This may be a + or minus depending on your view. Any sub 200 lb male will lock scrawny as all heck in tights no matter how defined your legs are. Possibly due to most of our pants being fairly baggy in the non cycling world. IMHO

Sounds strange I'm sure, but I just like the feel of tights. The slight compression is somewhat energizing, especially early in the morning.

I will say that for some reason I'm MUCH more uncomfortable walking in/out of the office in tights than I am tight shorts though.

One advantage to track pants is cost. Since they have become popular, I've been able to find name brand track pants for $8-$12. Methinks there is a HUGE markup on biking tights.

there is a huge markup on BIKE tights, but generic athletic tights can be had for good prices if you look around. Not sure if you need to get real bike tights (with chamois) since you could always wear bike shorts underneath.

With cycling leg warmers, you can wear them with any type of short you wish, and take them off when it gets too warm.

compression helps with muscle aches so that's a plus for tights. plus you can layer over tights with track or rain pants. sierra trading post has plenty of non-cycling tights at good prices.

I wear wind pants. Below 25ish I add polypro longjohns

I tried lose fitting pants on one ride and have never worn them again. That constant flapping in the breeze got really annoying for some reason.

Also for me a plus of the tights is that they seem to really piss off this one largish teenage boy in my neighborhood. He always yells an angry phrase at me when I pass him in the tights. Me thinks he might be a little insecure about his innermost thoughts :D

Down to about 35 or 40F I wear tights over my bike shorts. By the timne it gets to 30 or colder I switch to wind pants or something similar since I can layer long johns under them more easily. You do of course have to strap that right pant leg tight or bad things happen. I'd probably go with what you've got and save your bike dollars for things that are a lot more cool than tights.

I much prefer leggings (tights) even though I'm occasionally compared to a hamster in a wetsuit.

WalMart carries a knockoff of the UnderArmour ColdGear compression leggings (I believe they're the Starter brand, I too lazy to stand up and look in the closet).
