Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Would there be interest in a weight loss database?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The reason I ask is one of the Spinner crowd asked me about it. If there is enough interest, I'll try to figure out enough time to set it up. I may have to get a volunteer to run it, depending on time though.....let me know and also let me know if you are interested in adminning the db if I can't. It'll be based on Excel, so it will be easy to run.http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/8399/thumbsup4kk.gif
Sounds great - I don't mind running it either! Anyone else?

What I would suggest, by the way, would be an end of the month update for the DB. Too often can be discouraging unless you are on a program like a bariatric surgery. Normal healthy weight loss is a slow process. 7-12 pounds a month is a normal safe rate, by the way. Any more without some serious supplementation and continuous medical supervision isn't safe.
So we could do a Nov baseline and start from there...right in time for the holidays! :D

Sounds good to me! I seem to be flat at the moment, fluctuating btwn 229 and 231 continuously! Not gonna complain though considering where I started!

OK, I have the Database set up, End of October for baseline! You can PM the weights to me, it would make things easier! As of now, I have three participants, and more are welcome! I'll post a monthly weigh in for each of as as you get me the data. Due date will be the last day of each month.I'll need a couple of days +/- to collate the data and add it in then I'll post the graph. I'll pop a reminder up just before the weigh in dates. How about The Amazing Shrinking Clydesdales for a group name? I'll also take suggestions if that doesn't work for all of you!

I'm bumping this to extend an invite, I can add anyone to the database here. Monthly posting on this one. It's free! Also, if anybody wants a free excel Spreadsheet mileage log, let me know! I can either host it at a free server or email it to you. This is formatted as a daily ride log with monthly charts. You can modify it any way you want. I just have it pretty basic though.

Welcome aboard! Post a weight once a month. You can use PM if you prefer. I have you posted into the database now. All I need is the initial weight for the baseline.

Welcome aboard, Graham. All you need to do is get me a baseline weight. You can PM it if you prefer!:D
This will go once a month. If you weigh too often, it can get discouraging!

No point in being shy about it: 204 for me (up from when I started commuting a couple months ago--could be muscle gain, I guess, but is probably the newly raging appetite that arrived when I started the daily grind).

Post each month either in this thread or PM me, either one. However you feel most comfortable. You already have Octobers weight in.....the baseline. The next post date will be end of November. In the meantime Turboem, welcome aboard!

This website, My Calorie Counter (http://www.my-calorie-counter.com/), seems to offer a lot of tools in this area.
I currently only use it to track my weight and bodyfat %. I'm not too much of a calorie counter, so I just watch what I eat and try to focus on more fruits/veggies.
But, it does track weight loss, there is a public webpage/blog section, and you can form communities with others.
Why reinvent the wheel? (Of course, I'm sure there are many more websites that do something similar.)

First, because this can be specifically ours.
In addition, I get to have some fun while helping others as well as practice with various programs.
Third reason, for me at least, I'm slowly but surely working my way toward a PhD in Psychology and Sport Psychology and treatment/research into eating disorders is my planned field of speciality. All this can help me with background data for my thesis as well as some real world statistics. How often do you get a confluence like that where we can all help each other?

Well...what they hey! Why not?
My weight this morning was 288.4 lbs. My weight when I started riding again in mid-August was 318. Which do you prefer to be the baseline weight?
BTW, what isyour thesis?
Tom Stormcrowe
11-02-06, 11:51 AM
Current weight will be the baseline, mkadam, and thanks...and welcome!
As to my thesis? In very general terms:
Morbid obesity is a maladaptive expression of behaviors and biological imperatives dating back to Human Prehistory (ie: When We were Hunter/Gatherers in tribal units culturally speaking). The drives that cause morbid obesity would serve well in time of famine or shortage, for example. The eventual line of research, when I get to that point, will be toward effective nonsurgical techniques to deal with the maladaptive behavior.

Hello, ddeatley, of course you can join! Welcome aboard!:D http://bestsmileys.com/welcome/16.gif
Should we wager how much collectively as a group we can lose? If each of us can lose 3 pounds that's almost 50 pounds! Higher or lower?

Over the next month? Could be tough with the Thanksgiving holidays coming up, but I am pretty serious about my goals, so I will say, yeah higher than 50lbs collectively.:D

I would say 50 collective would be achievable, even with the holidays coming on!:D
Just ride after dinner! Let's plan a Thanksgiving day virtual group ride! Instead of sitting around all day, go out in the AM and pedal!:D

Absolutely!..I plan on losing 10lbs myself in November. Thanksgiving? Bring it on! Turkey-white meat, green beans, corn, salad and football!
While I have no intention of "going out in the AM and pedalling"- just too damn cold in PA for me this timeof year- I will commit to 1 hour on the trainer!
Maybe Santa will send me a list of uber-uber-warm biking clothes in detail for Christmas so I can venture out of my basement before late Spring.
