Touring - Anyone toured on a Centurion
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Has anyone toured on an early 80's model Pro Tour? Any blogs or personal experience. I have one and would like to get some feedback. I have only had mine for a few months. Mainly interested in the strength of the frame. Thanks, Rich

Most Japanese 80's frames are strong enough for touring. Look for lables on the frame telling what kind of steel the tubes are. Stay way from Hi-ten steel (gas pipe) Go look what your bike has and post it and I'm sure you will get plenty of feed back.

O.K. Here is what the frame is marked. Tange Industries, Champion #2 Butted Tubes.

My 80s Centrion is marked Made in Japan and has Suntour brakes and gears. I toured Southwest England on it several years ago. It's a great, solid bike, but not as sophisticated as my new tourer.

Cool! your frame is a quality one. The next question is, do you like your bike? What would you change about it? Depending on the condition of your bike, it's quite possible to tour with it.

I believe Jane Schnell rode a Centurion. Check out her book Changing Gears about her bike trip around the perimeter of the USA.
Here is a mid 80's Centurion I rescued from a neighbor's garbage. I stripped it down, repainted, and built it up as a touring bike for our 16th anual Wisconsin trip. It did all 650 miles but not under me. (I had back problems and rode a bent).
