Fullerton Loop -- Side Loop Rumors

The Fullerton Loop (http://www.routeslip.com/map.php?map=6518) is an intra-urban mountain bike ride. There is no single outstanding feature of the ride. But, because it is a mountain bike ride in a suburban community and it traverses a wide variety of trails, it is an epic ride.

I have heard rumors of several side loops to the Fullerton Loop, yet I only know of the side loop around the Union Oil Fields (http://www.routeslip.com/map.php?map=12680). One rumor is of a loop that goes around/through the Los Coyotes Country Club and Ralph B. Clark Regional Park (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en&q=Ralph+B+Clark+&near=fullerton+ca&ie=UTF8&z=13&ll=33.905328,-117.946644&spn=0.063685,0.117073&om=1). Another rumor is of a loop that crosses the bridge over Idaho/Gilbert in the middle of the Chevron oil field. I would appreciate finding out more about these side loops.

The Loop starts over by the Fullerton Courthouse which is NorthWest of Fullerton Jr. College. Clark Park is off of St. College and Imperial Hwy in Brea (unless I have the Park's wrong) and is not a part of in anyway the Loop trail not unless you would include about 15 miles of road and sidewalk riding to get there. I have done the portion that goes around the golf course. Not certain what oil fields are included but I have done the entire Loop trail. Will be anxious to see how others respond.

An "Epic" ride?

Yeah... I was thinking if I can do the entire Loop... it's not so epic. It is a good ride that can be done with intensity if you push for time. There are really no long climbs (although so really short and steep ones) and you are never too far away from a short cut back.

To me an epic rides is something greater than 25 miles in length and is a challenge.

I think of epic more in terms of something beyond the usual or ordinary. Something you have to do (or read) to say you are versed in a subject. However, the definitions generally require extrodinary size as well.

Without question, the Fullerton Loop isn't of epic proportion. But it is a unique ride and extra ordinary ride.

I think its just an "okay" ride. I don't know about all the off shoots you are talking about.If you want do something a little more than ordinary (epic) do Carbon Canyon. Start from the Yorba Linda side via Ridge Crest down to the campsites and back. The start is only a few miles from Fullerton Loop and MUCH more interesting (no asphalt).

Are you refering to the Rim Crest / Blue Gum (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=chino+hills+state+park,+ca+&sll=33.888611,-117.812222&sspn=0.127395,0.234146&ie=UTF8&z=19&ll=33.909289,-117.780234&spn=0.000995,0.001829&t=h&om=1) entrance to Chino Hills? There are several routes down to the campground from there. Is there one in particular that you recommend?

Yeah thats it sorry I forgot the names of the trails. I usually take rim crest going east through the electrical towers, then down the campsites and back up.

Chino Hills is my Park and I love to ride there. You can do a quick out and back or you can truly do a epic ride. But another word for the Loop - there is a certain uniqueness to the Loop just because its like a little bit of country right in the middle of civilization. It can also be short and quick or can be very technical and difficult depending on your direction and intensity. It has some unusual hazards and issues (mostly traffic but also fences, dog, people etc). Everyone should try the Loop, at least once. There are alot of challenges especially through the Coyote Hills area (I'm thinking of the steep hill and the root trail). Next time there, I get some photos and post.

PS has anyone out there ever ridden from Irvine Park/Weir Canyon to Anaheim Hills (and back)? Did it once. Talk about a "3 hour tour" that went wrong. Now that was EPIC! :eek:

Here's a photo from the top of the hill. We rode out of Irvine Park into Weir Canyon. This photo was taken overlooking the 91 Fwy (way off in the left hand corner). Got alittle lost but had a fun day. I've never mapped the route but should someday. We rode down the hill to Weir Blvd. Ended up on the Weir Canyon public trail and then eventualy crossed back over into the Irvine Company lands and back into Irvine Park.
