Santa Cruz doesnt do model years,

oh yeah, I did hear that... in my case they had the frame but were waiting for the rocker arm.... I'm convinced it will eventually show though ;) In the meantime, I'm doing a lot of crashing on my lbs's loaner bike ... better the scratches on that bike... right?

I'm back at work, part time and unofficially. The doctor will not release me to return until Thursday, Nov. 2 which will be 5 weeks post opt. so I can't ride with you guys Friday.

I tried Chino Hills on Saturday. Had a bad day. Could barely (and I mean barely) make it to Sycamore. I just don't have any mojo right now. Still very anemic and of course, alittle out of shape.

Sunday I did Aliso/Wood Canyon with buddy Richard. Felt better but still out of shape. After about 2 hours of riding, I'm done. You'll have to give me some time to build back up my strength. Maybe by then the new bike will be in.

OK so Santa Cruz dosen't do model years... so I'm waiting for a new 2007 bike since I couldn't get a 2006 bike - if that's not "model" years I don't know what is. Note the new bike (Superlight) is improved over the old bike... doesn't that sound like something they do to change model years? Or an yeah when they change the Blur into a Blur Classic and added the other models... again model year thing at least in my book.

Well... the only problem with your idea is that the only way I can keep up with you is before you rebuild your strength  I actually did okay up to the tables at chino but the air was so dry I practically died from coughing.. . ugh! Between that and the whole falling over thing... its gonna take me forever to get off the fire roads ;) That's okay, there are a few near me I can practice on... and Herb promises not to tell anyone what a clutz I am on Friday :p I was hoping you could sneak that one in since its pretty smooth etc.... :( if you change your mind, let me know...

If and when they make changes they may refer to it as a model year, but alot of there bikes dont change for years at a time. The nomad I dont think will be changing anytime soon. The difference is usually the model year shocks and forks, but the 07 stuff has been out for months now.

Sean... I understand but how then do you refer to the new bikes that are coming out - I guess 2007 bikes would be appropriate but 2007 models would not? To me all the same really. SC does change out the shocks and forks when new stuff from Fox comes up and the Superlight is being redesigned for next (2007) year. Of course the Blur went through all sorts of changes. My bud has a Blur "classic" before it became the Blur Classic. The Blur Classic is different from his old school Blur.

Anyway it appears to be a semantics issue and SC is a weird company... but i like the Superlight!

And Tracy:

I can't ride Bovian well either. I do alot of walking. I like singletrack but singletrack with BIG dropoffs is scary (try Rapture sometime - there's a pucker trail!). Plus I've seen my expert riding buddies take some nasty spills on Bovian. Now riding up to 4 Corners on Telegraph not such a problem but is for me right now. The anemia makes me tire very easily.

What you and Herb should do, especially if weather permitting, is take NORTH RIDGE to Sycamore and ride down that and then return on Telegraph. That's my favorite ride when in shape. Right now from what I can see, the wind blew all the silt off North Ridge so it's in good shape.

I'll think about you while at work. =sigh= it's back to the grind!

for now I think I'm just gonna go up that basic trail... especially since it's pretty much the blind leading the blind  There's no way I'd go down Bovian any time soon by myself... even if my shoes and bike are easily found by the emt's! I was okay (more or less) on the drop off point but as soon as there was a rock near the path or one of those turns that end up uphill... I was walking. I seem to have the most trouble stopping w/out falling over to the right  what can I say... I'm a goober

I'm gonna go find the map and look up North Ridge... just to see... but I'll probably err on the safe side :p

Hopefully, you'll be back to yourself soon!

It is pretty much. Some area's are real steep, others are really fast and flowing. Lots of roots and log jams throughout. There are areas to relly let it roll and fly and others ya better keep the speed under control lest ya kiss a tree. One of the trails in SC has berms 6 ft high, that is soo fun cause you can really hit em hard and not worry about it. If ya get up this way we will have to take ya to a few of the places. I know Santa Barbara has some really awesome stuff.

The first race of the season was at his Place called Lake Moreno aka Sage Brush. FUN place, there was a good 25 min climb to the top but the decent was double track down. They let ATVs and dirt bikes out there on the trails so the trails were WELL groomed and packed really good. Very flowy. The motor bikes breaking bumps were like woop sections to us on MTBs and goes into some nice 4-6ft banks. The rythm down was woop woop berm, woop woop berm with a steep shoot in there along the way. All flowing at 25+mph. That DH section was prolly a good 15 minutes long. Very very fun. Almost thought I was on a BMX bike. Alot of bike pumping over the woop sections.

Tracy - North Ridge is not technical its just grindy - something you are good at. As you approach the entrance to Chino Hills (from Carbon Canyon) its the uphill that's on the left. If you go right you are doing Telegraph. Sycamore can be technical. I have to say I have only once before been able to ride it without stopping or walking but its not as technical as Bovian and the trail is fairly wide. Have Wayne take you up that way sometime. I like doing the climb just for the challenge. It's a 6 mile hill at an average grade of 6 - 8% with hardly no flat spots (until you reach Gilman Peak and then there is some up and downs).

Stick with Telegraph. It's a fun route as well. Coming back down Telegraph is much more fun than coming back on South Ridge!

somehow I'm thinking North Ridge is out of my league right now... I'd manage to hit the one rock/bump that's there, fall over, and land back at the bottom (shoes up, of course :p ). It definately sounds like a good challenge though so I may try it sometime when no one can watch me crash  I didn't realize that this was the trail Wayne was telling us about on that last ride... I think you also mentioned it at one point before as well... so it'll definately be a while before I try it! The other issue is that the loaner bike is a too big and it reallly makes me nervous so that's probably not good either.

I'm sure I'll manage to fall over doing something on friday though... pictures forthcoming ;)

for your old c'dale? What year/model is it?

EDIT

How about this
http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/Headset/product_122265.shtml

It's a headset that adapts from the HUGE c'dale headtube and you can use a normal 1 1/8" fork..

"To be clear, the Double X is for forks with 1.5 steerers. The Double Xc and Xc short (which is what I use) are the reducer headsets that allow you to run a 1 1/8 steerer in your Cannondale."

Tracy some North Ridge Photos - trail is not tough just grindy... 6 miles of this before a downhill. North Ridge is a main road for fire access and ranger trucks. It's not as rocky or uneven as Telegraph.

Was that the year we had CRAZY amounts of rain?

BCIpam
10-30-06, 07:41 PM
Yep - the park was closed for a looooong time due to the rains and road washouts. In fact, when these photos were taken the trail was oficially closed - ride at your own risk, because if injured, rescue vehicles would not be able to get in. I recall there were 4 or 5 washouts across the road you had to hike a bike but the Park sure was pretty. I actually think these photos were taken in June 2004. The trail had narrowed into a sweet, technical singletack all the way to 4 Corners. Bovian, McDermot and Rapture did not exist due to overgrowth.

I really miss those days. I hated it when they finally got around to repairing and plowing the road. Oh well.

Bovian had some nice turns that caught me by surprise on the SS. Fun lil trail. Is there MORE like that in that park? I'm sure you have prolly explored and rode every foot of that place. I know I have of my local trails.

This USED to be a bit easier before that rainy year, then the runoff cleared off alot of the dirt leaving just rock exposed.
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e359/jsigone/MTB/SS%20in%20Sycamore/2006_0930Sycamore0021small.jpg

Used to be smooth w/ a granite water break at 1/2 way point. Now it a lil looks intimidating from the top
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e359/jsigone/MTB/SS%20in%20Sycamore/2006_0930Sycamore0022small.jpg

I guess it got so intimidating that cut a lil trail on the side to bypass the drop in point.

If you liked Bovian - you will love Rapture.

Ride out to 4 Corners, from the picnic bench look East (just across the road from Bovian) and you will see the sign post for Rapture. Bovian is a "c" ticket, Rapture is an "E". Lots of narrow, twisty singletrack, steep drops, rock gardens, and fast downhill. If you do Rapture you will end up down in Chino. Continue South towards the Ranger station, go past it, bypass Telegraph, hit the road and then watch for South Ridge. Take South Ridge back up to Telegraph or for that epic adventure, continue on South Ridge.

PS where is your trail - that's scary looking!

Also as I have recommended to Tracy - take North Ridge but go past Sycamore and ride over to McDermott. Take McDermott down to 4 Corners. Very steep and technical.

I'm 5'8" have fairly long legs. It's 2006. Almost brand new - literally - bought it in spring and got hurt and sick, couldn't ride it much.

Yes Avid mechanicals and Fox Float 100/120. This is a 5" travel "all mountain" bike. Model is Stumpjumper FSR with disc brakes. I added Hope seat post clamp and skewers (in red). I'll leave the WTB Laser saddle (if wanted. What's shown in the photo is the ass hatchet Spec. saddle) but will take off the pedals.

Mtblurkr... ow ma gad... love the Rapture photo especially the tiny little rider... I can't picture where it was taken but I recognize the telephone towers in the background.

If I do Chino I want to do Raptor for sure, maybe go explore a bit and spend some good time on the bike. If I'm in the driving mood I'll drive to SART.

Those are great pics of Chino's colors, I love the no smog look in the background.

That local trail was Sycamore Canyon in Poway. Goes 9 miles striaght shot to Santee if you like. I can put an easy 20 miles there and not even go to Santee. Very deverse area to ride, from nasty DH to brutal climbs to creek bed tree dodging single track. Which is why I ride there as often as I do. I LOVE that single track sections. About 85% of Syc is on a single track so it's fun on any bike I take there.
