I've ridden the eastern half of this nice trail before, but today is the day to ride the whole thing (11.5 miles one way).

C'mon along ...

11am Sunday morning, temp is about 55 F. Feels cool, but shorts are in order today!

Little did I know that the trail is mostly uphill as we ride east to west. So,
we'll put our heads down into the wind until we reach the west end of the
trail in Elkhorn, then take pics as we ~cruise~ back in the warm fall sun.

After cruising in town just a little, we head back to the trail.
(Yeah, those are my finger prints on the lens. :o )

Once it warmed up a little, we start running across more friendly cyclists ...

... and hikers.

We're half way back now entering Springfield, WI. On the left, here, is
the "Cup and Pedal". They have coffee, lunches, and bike rentals. There
is also an nice parking lot here.

There are some interesting sights in Springfield. Poke around and
check them out.

Still some riding ahead of us ... but at least it's downhill!

http://members.aol.com/j999w/WR/WR12.jpg

Arenberg Forest? Cobbles ahead?

http://members.aol.com/j999w/WR/WR13.jpg

Entering Lyons, WI. Neat memorial to war heros by the flag ...

http://members.aol.com/j999w/WR/WR14.jpg

... and quite a few "Trick or Treaters" today.

http://members.aol.com/j999w/WR/WR15.jpg

Getting near the end now. The 'bonk' is just setting in.

Over the bridge and through the woods ...

Total ride was about 25 miles, mostly on gravel, we made it!
Just in time to enjoy a Cliff Bar, Diet Coke, and catch the end of
the football game on the radio.

It was a good ride, very relaxing, and worth the drive.

Thanks for posting the photos and trip report. I live near by and have thought about checking out the trail. And now I will.

I plotted the trail on routeslip:

http://www.routeslip.com/routelist.php?country=United%20States&state=WI&city=Elkhorn

I was surprised to learn that there is over 200 ft of climbing east to west. No wonder that head wind felt so hard.

i'm moving to the Fond du Lac area in about a month... are these trails for road bikes or is the limestone surface more suited for a cross-type or mountain bike??

I wouldn't ride my rode bike on the crushed limestone trails. Sometimes the surface is packed down pretty well, other times it's fairly loose.

ON this day I rode my road bike with 25mm clinchers. No problems at all. I'd ride 23mm tires if it's been dry the previous week. A MTB would be overkill IMHO. (unless it's snowed ;) )

We did that trail earlier this fall and liked it too. I thought there was a climb in there too, thanks for pointing that out.
