Halloween...here it is again.

I love the cute little kids who dress up and love Halloween. This thread is not about them.

I hate being taken hostage by this holiday......I can't stand:

The kid who keeps coming back again and again because you have good candy
The kids who whine because you only gave them one Reeces Peanutbutter Cup
The older kids who don't even dress up and expect candy
The older kids who want your candy but won't even say "trick or treat"
The tricksters who knock down decoration from houses
The parents who are with kids who aren't even in costume

Don't these ones just annoy you? And I see some of each of them every year!

Yo KT,

Keep an open heart and mind Amigo. Some of those kids or their parent/parents may not have money for a costume. Or the parent may not have enough free time to make one for their kids. It is all good and it is just one night. Show them some love!!!!! I go out of my way to make sure I have good candy and give out a few pieces to each kid. When I am out of candy, the lights go off and the door gets closed. I loves me some Halloween.

One begets the other. Open up the goody bag and give 'em two Reese's! :p

We let the kids reach in and get their own out of the bowl. For the most part they only take one piece and I have to tell them to take some more. It's rare the kids who go for the gusto and a whole handful of candy, but it's kind of funny watching their faces as they think they are committing highway robbery....

I love messing with the kids who come to the door and will even ask the kids who don't have costumes what they are dressed up as and that they'll get candy once they give me an answer. It's funny what they come up with just for some Nerds and SweeTarts. :D

Just remember this.... Being generous on Halloween pays dividends all year long!

Maybe I should have explained more.

You give them one, and they complain they want two.
You give them two and they complain they wanted three or four.
You give them three or four.....you get the picture.

I guess that's a point I hadn't considered....at least for that particular point.

I actually like Halloween for the most part....it's the few rotten apples that annoy me. I didn't say they ruined it for me....just annoys me a bit.

That's why I don't go home on Halloween...i just dress up as a "bike rider", and run around going MUHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA in the night, like some kind of cracked-out loony.

Of course at the company halloween party, I am going there as "the Invisible Man" ;)

....note, this cat does NOT do company parties :p

I wished we got kiddies at the door. I think its so cute to see them dressed up. But we live in a Condo and not many kids around. I think they much rather go to the houses around us. :)

There are many good reasons why I should never be allowed to own a chainsaw. Halloween is one of them. Cuts heal, severed limbs can be reattached. But the memories provoked by the sight of a six foot man in a hockey mask chasing you down the street with a chainsaw in his hands while cackling maniacally may linger forever....

Seriously though, I usually turn the lights out once the younger kids are gone and the teenagers start coming around. In my neighborhood, we get a lot of visits from the poorer Hispanic neighborhoods to the south and east. I think this is really the only occasion for a lot of them to get treats like this, so I try to be generous. I usually sit out front with a book of scary stories and wait for them to come by. That said, I usually don't just offer the bowl to them because I've seen too many kids drop their goody bags and try to dive in with both hands when I do.

I would be the one dressed in a panda costume going after people with a chainsaw, while shouting "I am a saaaaad panda!" at the top of my lungs.

My brothers hunting buddy, who put the RED in redneck dressed as the Texas Chainsaw Massacre guy one year, all the way down to the working chainsaw, from which he removed the chain. My brother said it was hilarious to see the party empty out when George fired up the saw.

Halloween is probably my favorite holiday..
yep, the candies... love seing my friends in costumes.
The haunted hotel is fun too.
I love the little kids all excited.. love to find the best looking house around the neiborhood.

I dont like teanagers trick or treating, I feel like KT, they dont even bother to dress up and take the candies away from the little one who really believe there is something magical about halloween.
Hate people who TP houses and there were tons of pumpkins smash??( maybe wrong spelling) all around the schools today..
Over all, halloween is cool... minus the teanagers ( and yes, I have one and she was told she cant trick or treat... mean mom)
( OK KT.. Im asking.. was it smash?)

I may be stuck at work and miss the trick or treaters this year. If so I will truely miss them.

I'll miss the older kids who are out with their younger siblings, actually having a good time doing something they are 'too old for'.

I'll miss the young kids whose parents remind them to say 'thank you'

I'll miss the groups of only older kids, all in costume, who are capturing some of the last simple joys of childhood.

I'll especially miss the kids who forget about the candy and pet my two pure bred American Attention Hounds.

But most of all I'll miss the chance to relive some happy childhood times from the other side.

I don't think that is going to hurt anyone except possibly you. You sound kinda bitter, i can relate because i have those tendancies as well. If it weren't for my kids I'd probably be a crotchety old fart.

But I love Halloween and Christmas because my kids love it so much. It reminds me of when i was young and how exciting those two days were. So I try and make them as special as possible for my kids. My wife and I take them trick or treating every year and i video the whole proceedings. Some day when they are gone, i will be able to go back and still enjoy these moments.

Good lord what a scrooge.

Just turn off the porch light and lock the door if your too spiritually depleted to deal with the holiday.

If you don't give any of the candy away then you can eat it all yourself. Feel better?

So what's stopping you from celebrating it for its true meaning?

The commercialization, materialism, etc., of the two months leading to the actual holiday can be stressful and annoying, but nobody's forcing you to join in, are they?

BTW, I'm writing this because I'm in the same boat with you. The holidays are very stressful for me. If I can remind myself what it's really about, I calm down a bit.... :o

I like halloween, it's one of the best holidays of the year.

I miss cornfields though :(

Nothing beat camping out in a cornfield on Halloween night, much cider was consumed (alcoholic cider, I may add....yum!), and we had great times.

Of course it was fun scaring the crap out of the girls....one year one of my friends made this really ugly looking fake crow.....well he put a ballcap on it, so the bird was sticking to the side of it by it's feet. When he layed down to sleep near her (she was already asleep), he put the hat on (looked like the bird was standing on the side of his head) and then started making crow noises.....when she opened her eyes, then practically jumped straight up without even exiting her sleeping bag, we all broke out into laughter.

She got back at him pretty good too....those were the days.

I've tried, but my own family just didn't "get it". Though they will never say it (most won't) it's all aobut the presents and "showing how Christmassy" you are. So, it's hard ot celebrate it for its true meaning when everyone aroung you (including your own family) won't participate that way.

Yes, they are forcing you. They force you by bombarding it down your throat everywhere you go. With the super sales, the Santa Claus dispalys and decoration everywhere, the commercialized Christmas music, the guilt trip commercials on TV and Radio......it never ends!

at first we were going to hand out candy, but then we decided screw it. we never get many of the little bastards on our street anyway. and very few actually live in the neighborhood. Like Christmas, I see it as a stressor, not a fun thing. and getting the dogs outta the way to answer the door, etc. so another year of the porch light out I guess.

I hear you, man. exactly the way my family does it. tons of crap and decorations that take weeks to put up and weeks to take down. very materialistic and ... you know they actually like to take pics of the unwrapped loot set up under the tree. I am glad to be free of it.

* The tricksters who throw eggs and worse things.
* What is annoying is the trick-or-treaters who don't walk while doing their rounds...instead they do
so with armored escort...(parents driving them from house to house in their parent's cars.
* Lastly, the bullies who take extra effort to make life miserable for parent's kids.

- tonight, as in Halloweens past, i will climb on the roof w/my karaoke machine, don a big plastic pumpkin head, then turn on the floodlights and sing:

"Haalllooooo! Halllooooo! I know all! I see all! I am the great pumpkin!"

(little kids and cute mommies in their 30s seem to love the act - and yes, i do have clothes on when i do this...)

Would someone please give me some clarification please?

I live in Northern New England where most everyone does their trick-or-treating in the late afternoon and evening just before and after dark. However, I understand that people in other areas of the country start trick-or-treating early in the afternoon. Why so early? I don't understand. Perhaps there are some perfectly good answers for starting at that time of day.

Why? Please let me know.

I'm trying to figure out what to do tonight. I think I may go around scaring the kids...or I may do some fire eating in front of the house to entertain the kids.

We'll see.

I'm going to go out tonight as the Phantom of the Opera (sadly, my pirate ship bike conversion didn't hash out).

Because parents are absolutely terrified about letting their kids go out in the dusk/dark. Is it paranoid prattle from TV or something? (I don't know, I don't have a TV.) I remember going out to trick-or-treat around 6 after an early dinner, and staying out until about 9. We used full sized pillowcases, and usually dumped them at home twice in the night. My dad took us until we were about 10, then we went ourselves. He instilled in us a strong drive to work hard to gather the Halloween loot. :D I remember 14 being the cut-off age, but being 14 years old 19 years ago meant you were a lot more kid-like than being 14 today.

Halloween stunk this year. We got candy and even had a lit, carved jack-o-lantern, and only 4 kids came to our door. :( I think the neighbors in houses steer their kids away from the apartments, though we have dozens of rug rats living here. My housemate is going to offer the leftover candy to some of the moms tomorrow.

Ooh... I can only imagine how amazed and delighted I would have been at seeing a fire eater whilst begging. Do that! Candy comes and candy goes, but you'd be in their Halloween memories decades from now.
