Foo - Teaching Somebody To Ride

I haven't started a thread in a while so here goes.

There are 4 of 5 _______ Clan brothers living in my house , counting myself and we unfortunately have 2 cars, one of which is mine who doesn't work. Everybody else works, one of whom is on the other end of Fort Worth.

Naturally that arises an interesting problem when it comes time for me to take everybody except one to work. One works extremely close and so we decided to see if it was possible for him to ride to work, should the need ever arise.

Now, as a whole, our whole family is short. My dad probably doesn't come up to 5'7 and I think my mom is shorter or same size. However the youngest brother is really really really short. And I find out just how short, as he tries to get on the bike (my old wal-mart bike). He can barely reach the pedals and he can't touch the ground with his feet. Unfortunately the seat post has been lowered and in order to get any lower one has to cut the pipe.

He, however, is resilient and wishes to continue on. Well it is at this point that he informs me that he has never ridden a bike before. :eeks: I'm really not sure how that managed to happen in our family since we rode bikes all of our lives.

Let me tell you, that was a very very very interesting block. He kept rocking the bike to one side so bad that despite hanging onto the seat and the handlebar he nearly toppled over quite a few times. Took a bit before I realized that it was still in 3rd gear, since that's usually what i ride in, and then actually get it switched to 1st and 4th. The ride got a tad smoother unfortunately it didn't last too long. Still not sure why the heck his weight was being tossed from side to side so badly.
Needless to say, it was very interesting.

Might go by Wal-Mart this weekend and see if he wants to grab a 150 dollar bike :D

Check k-mart first, they got a 99.99 Mongoose on sale 21 speed. Could be at Walmart as well but not sure. Also has shock absorbers.

I've seen quite a few abandoned k-mart buildings. but never seen a non-vacant one.

Really:eek:, i have a k-mart 10 minutes away from where i live. Walmart is about 20 minutes from where i live. Bike doctor is with in 5-10 minutes as well. Where do you live man?.

North Dakota, New Mexico, Chicago, most of Texas. K-mart was going out of business nationwide when we left north dakota. By the time I left new mexico the last K-mart that i knew had gone out of business.
What was the deal with them. Did they get bought out by somebody?

Sears bought them out, North east still has a decent amount of k-marts. Had no idea they where going out of buisness that quickly.

K-Marts and Super K's. The Super K's sell food as well. mmmm good. two blocks from my house.

OK....so I'm not the only one who read that at first and started wondering what "clan" he was talking about.

Moving on...yeah, a cheap thrift store bike would be nicer than a new cheap bike from X-Mart, but it can be hard to come by one. Craigslist is a wonderful resource for such things, but it's not guaranteed that you'll find something there.

I'd check Craigslist, a few nearby thrift stores, and then resort to your X-Mart of choice. Of course, how much time you have to find a bike will determine your chances of finding a nice used bike.

I doubt would trust a thrift bike store or know where to look for a thrift store or have the patience to deal with them. :p I've slammed those wal-mart bikes 25 miles an hour into a pole and been hit by a car on another one and all of those bikes WERE/ARE STILL RIDEABLE. I have a pretty high confidence level with those bikes. IF my Bianchi did any of those it would be totalled and i'd be shelling out another 1500 if i wanted to replace it.

Yeah, can't argue with the durability of a 45-lb solid chunk of steel, that's for sure! Your brother wouldn't notice the difference between that and a niced used racing bike anyway.

I got one of those free MTBs when you buy a stereo over $500 from Matthews (top of the hill Daly City). There wasn't a single alloy component on that thing and it got me through 6-years at university without needing any maintenance at all ( other than oil on the chain). My last quarter, I was sprinting down the street rushing to class, some wannabe crunchy-granola, barking-eating, tree-hugger hippy-chic backs out of her driveway in her new BMW without even looking! I slam into her fender and fly over the hood; I made sure to turn and give her a mean look as I went over. The bike suffered a bent fork, bent handlebars, taco'd front wheel and that was it. The frame was still straight and even shifted fine! :)

I dont think I could find a cheap racing bike that would fit his short and scrawning ass ;)
I'm 5'5 I don't even know what that makes him but i'd say 5'2 or under easily.
