Northeast - How do you cross the Hackensack & Passaic Rivers?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

OK, I'm sure this has been asked before but....

I'm in the Jersey City / Hoboken area, and want to figure out how to go West -- e.g., over to Chatham or Montclair. As far as I can tell, the big obstacle is crossing the Hackensack and maybe Passaic Rivers. While I believe that bikes belong on the road, I don't think that extends to the Pulaski Skyway. :D

Do I need to go all the way up to Route 46 or something?

There is probably a way to ride, but I'd probably look into taking the PATH from Hoboken/JC to Harrison or Newark Penn Station. I think bikes are allowed off peak.

Is Route 1 bikeable?

I've seen mention of riding on Route 1/9 but it's a truck route and probably NOT recommended.

Route 1 sucks in a car, let alone on a bike. ;)

I have a folding bike, but the idea of cycling around Newark holds zero appeal. Guess I'll have to take the train to the 'burbs and go from there.

Well, it costs more, but you can also take bikes on NJ Transit from Hoboken. That will get you to the other side of Newark at least. IMO, the good riding doesn't really start until about the Chatham or Madison stop on that line.

What about Newark Trnpk or Bellview Trnpk?
Looks like the next crossing north that isn't an interstate is route 46 in Little Ferry.

Train it!
