Recumbent - Ilovebents.com and other entry level bikes

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hello all,

In the search for information regarding entry level recumbents, I see a number of relatively low cost offerings. It seems from researching these threads that most or all of these are Taiwan imports. If so, are these all, or similar bikes made by the same manufacturer overseas and being distributed via different company names? In particular, I have seen Sun, Actionbent, Ilovebents. Are any of these better than others in terms of quality, fit, reliability, and support? If you have problems with these bents, what resources do you have? Any experiences/info you could share would be great. I am a pretty big guy at 260 lbs, 6 foot, and want to get into this kind of biking. I am concerned that my size and weight may be problematic for cheaper bents. Realistically, should I forego these entry levels? Thanks in advance.

Sun is fine. Entry level, heavy, but fine. Actionbent is great so long as you're mechanical enough to put the bike together or know a recumbent-knowledgeable mechanic who is. I have no clue about ilovebents. Those that get the bugs worked out of their actionbents seem to like them pretty well, and they look great.

The only problem I have had with my Actionbent has been that a weld on the seat broke, but AB replaced my seat. The jetstream is particularly problematic with the seat issue, because the seat acts as a frame piece and the seatframe is pretty flimsy for that type of duty. But, I love my jetstream USS and if the seat breaks again, well...my view might change.

The proper address is http://www.ilovebent.com/ (I hadn't seen that site before, and it took a bit to figure that out. I didn't find any site at "ilovebents"...)

Cycle Genius also has an entry level CLWB for around $600 or so.

I don't really know if any is better than the others.
I have a Sun SWB that worked just fine, but the frame turned out to be a bit too short for me.
Got a Cycle Genius LWB now, don't have any problems with it either.

If you can cought up $1000 or so, there's quite a few more choices available.

I was 285 when I started riding a Sun EZ Sport AX (aluminum frame). Now I'm 235 and the bike hasn't had any problems. I've put 4,000 miles on it. They are plenty stout for your weight range. Nice bike too. bk

I would go with ActionBent over the recumbentusa and ilovebikes because they don't seem to have a parts supply, and they only bought a group of a few bikes and trikes.
