View Full Version : How would oy handle this cyclist?

I'm riding on a bike path yesterday afternoon, temps in the 60's. It was a perfect day. About 20 miles into my ride I come up on some guy probably in his 30's at an intersection on an older bike with a couple saddle bags, kind of beat up. Now, I was wearing shorts and a long sleeve jersey and I was comfortable. This guy had on jeans, a heavy winter coat, winter hat with a bid crooked mushroom looking helmet, and he's talking to himself. He turns and starts talking to me and I can't understand what he's saying, so I nod and say "yea" and I go through the intersection. I'm just cruising at about 17 - 18mph and I hear a bike come up on my left. It's heavy winter coat guy, huffing and puffing. He pulls right next to me, practically touching me, and he just stares at me with this weird look on his face. I glance over at him, and I give him sort off a dirty look, to let him know I'm annoyed. Now I don't mind being passed, I don't mind a friendly cyclist who wants to chat for a few minutes... But this guy was just a weirdo and he won't stop staring, finally he says "you can't beat me", I say "I'm not racing pal, I'm just out for a ride". Well he stays right next to me staring, so I finally accelerate to about 20mph. He gets out of his saddle and sprints up right next to me again, once again staring, and I mean his head is turn completely to the side staring at me. I finally say "Hey buddy F**k off!". He says "It's a public path I can ride wherever I want". Now I'm about to sit up, swing my fist out and clock this guy, but I figure I'll really speed it up and try to loose him, Which I did. He finally fell back. but if somehow he was able to keep up, he was going to get a punch right in the face.

I dunno. I'll have to ask him.

HEY OY! Cummere for a minute! Some dude on BF wants to talk to you!

He may have been autistic...I don't think a punch in the face would have cured him.

Oy said the same thing. He also said next time you should smile and stare back!

awwww..it's OK, annoying but OK, some people are not well out there.
You handled it fine, no need for violence, who knows maybe some roadies made fun of him before for the way he dress and he has a chip on his shoulder, after all he's not a bad cyclist if he followed you at 20 mph.

Get going really fast and as he pulls up beside you slam on the brakes.

Start riding a 8 mph. That would prevent you from endagering others on the path. A bike path is not a good place to go fast.

You should have totally Cinzano'd him into the ditch!

I think that was the first blockbuster gay film. Way before Brokeback Mountain.

Back on topic. The guy was mentally ill. Give him a break. People are afraid of mentally ill people but in fact they are far more likely to be the victim than perpetrator of an assault. Just smile, say "have a nice day", or whatever homily is appropriate, and get on with what you're doing.

I like to make these people suffer... like boiling a frog. I pick it up ever so gradually, about +0.5mph every 30-seconds or so, they can't feel it. And they try to keep up and I hear the breathing get louder and louder. It gradually turns to gasping and huffing & puffing. If I feel them slipping back, I slow down just a little to give them hope. Then I gradually pick it up again and again.... :)

Yea. I don't know if he was mentaly ill or not. I should have wiped a booger on him, then took off. I'd cut infront of him so he would get cought in my jet wash and crash.

I actually did that on a cruise last year. The housekeepers made little towel animals each day. They were kind of freaky. So I done killed 'em.

I thought about getting some ketchup from the dining room to splatter around, but I didn't think said housekeepers would look too kindly upon that.
