Commuting - Help...Just Moved to Charlotte,NC
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hello and help! My family is relocating to Charlotte. I'm temporarily staying in the University area on North Tryon near WT Harris blvd and working in Uptown at 800 West Trade.
I need help with bike routes from the University area and probably Huntersville. I found the map of greenways but they don't seem to connect to each other and I'm not sure where to get on them or even if they will help. Does Statesville road work well for commuting? I used to ride 20+ miles to work in DC 2-3 days a week but most of that was on the WO&D bike trail.
Also how is the bike crime in Uptown? I've seen some bikes locked up outside at public racks but that doesn't seem very safe.
Any help is appreciated. Contact me offline if you prefer.

I lived in the CLT area for a few years, and chances are it's not as bike-conscious as the place from which you moved. But they're working on it: LINK (http://http://www.charmeck.org/Departments/Transportation/Pedestrian+and+Bicycle+Connectivity+Projects.htm)
The Charlotte Dept of transportation has produced a "bicycle cuitability map" that may aid you in finding routes. Unfortunately it seems it's not available online. But you can call/visit them, and they are close to your workplace.
Mecklenburg/Union Counties Bicycle Suitability Map
This map is designed to help cyclists use the existing network of thoroughfares to travel through this busy, urbanized area. Five designations are shown — moderate, advanced, extreme caution, not recommended and prohibited. Collector streets, which are not rated but are typically suitable for bicycling, are also highlighted. Locations of parks, museums, libraries, schools and other destinations are shown. Safety information is provided.

I would not send you down North Tryon. I think the Plaza might be the best of the arterial roads to ride on. Check out this route (http://www.routeslip.com/map.php?map=13256). Does it seem feasible? As much as I'd hate riding on Harris for any distance, I believe there is a shoulder.

Im coming to Asheville later this month to look for property for our upcoming
move. Can you recommend any area within 14 miles or so outside of Asheville proper
in which to look that might be good for bike commuting ?? We are trying to stay
semi-rural but bikeable to town of safe roads. Any insights or places we should put
on our list ???
Thanks in advance !! :D
