It seems that there would be some sort of maintenance record or paper trail pointing to the employees who vandalized the bike. As they seem to be handy with tools, they should be sought out and made to put in some volunteer hours rehabing bikes for kids or some such.

Nice post, thanks for that.

I am on the three speed mailing list, and so I thought I would post the pic (via link) distributed through that medium.

From the email, it seems that some of the parts were loaned for the photo op, because the donated parts weren't available yet.

that's kind of the "funny" part...the bike wasn't done, but they threw one together for the photo/press conference.

I'm also on their mailing list, BTW

I've been following this saga on the Commuting forum too. What's great is how his Raleigh is "An American Classic". Wonderful what those guys did for him though .

I gotta do some checking and see if my contacts in the local British bike club we involved in this. I didn't know about it at all until jI read the second story came out in the paper this morning. I'll bet the maintenance guys that cut it up are praying to their gods that their names don't come up.

I've posted a more complete story at

One reason so few of the parts match is that the guy who initiated this went to Iowa, unaware of the press conference. Not only did he have many of the donated parts, he had all of the original parts that had been left on the frame, (fork, fenders, wheels, brakes pulley, fulcrum clips etc.). In the photo, the only original part is the frame.

Fat chance. If you lined the destruction crew b*tards up in front of the panel of collectors, they'd all respond in a careless manner that they 'did their job' - and then proceed to ignore you. Same reaction when you complain about some city lawn maintenance idiot that he's just about to back his blower into your car/bike.

In other words: "Who cares. Get Lost." (Isn't that all too familiar wherever you go today, eh?)
