Hey I'm planning to take what few parts I can off this road bike to start a cross build that I'll be using mostly for long commutes over rough pavement.

The wheels are Campagnolo Neutrons and I have two ten speed cassette clusters for them. I'm obviously going to have different brakes and a non-Campy two ring crankset on whatever frame I end up with. I wonder what the odds are of these older Chorus 10 brifters working well with the cross brakes and crankset. I actually like bar-end shifters and guess I could use Shimano in friction mode if it comes to that.

Anyone been down this road?

I have a Veloce/Mirage triple on my Waterford with Campy barcons. They come in 10 speed. Why not try a set? They are all over ebay for $139 including cables and frame stops.

I'll look into the Campagnolo barcons. I hadn't seen them in years, did a quick ebay search last night before posting and only came up with old stuff. I thought they may have stopped producing them.

cs1: So are you running a full Mirage/Veloce driveline? What derraileurs are you using?

the campy brifters should work fine with any brake designed to work with road levers, so pretty much all cantilevers will work fine with them. i have a friend who runs avid shortys with her campy brifters just fine. you shouldn't have any issues with a different crankset other than reseting limits on your front derailler and such.

I use old CAmpy 8 (that I converted to 9) on my IF and it works great. Sometimes better than my new carbon 10 on my roadbike. You could use the cranks as well with smaller outer ring.

Levers work my Spookys just fine. I think you'll be pleased with the shifting and breaking.

My Kona rocks some 06 Centaur, and everything works well. Campy cranks work fine for cross also.

I've got 10sp Veloce on my 29er, and it's been rock-solid.

Why is it obvious to change to non-Campagnolo cranks? With a 111 mm Campa axle and a TA 46 or 48 outer ring the Chorus cranks will work fine on any cross bike

They will work just fine with any cantilever brakeset (Spooky, Empella, Avid, etc.)

Why would you go back to friction and less control if you already have a set of Ergos?

I have Veloce on my cross bike. I couldn't dream of running Shimano on my cross and Campy on my road bikes. It works fantastic as always :)

I recently purchased a Torelli Cyclocross frame. I put a Daytona triple 9spd on the bike with cantis. The ergo shifters worked just fine. I have a Racing Triple crankset that was 30/40/50. I replaced the 30 inner ring with a 26 tooth T/A Specialities 74 BCD. I find this coupled with a 13-29 cassette is a fantastic combination. I have yet to find anything I can't climb almost as well as my MTB.
I can ride the bike as a cross or a road bike by simply changing wheels. If I decide to go 10spd I can simply buy a cassette and 10 spd index ring. So far the 9spd is just fine.
I have a set of campy 10spd barend index shifters I purchased a couple of years ago. They work well with my roadbike with aero bars.
