I'll be in Mt. Vernon, Wa next week with my wife for vacation. Planning to take the bikes along and get in a few rides. Is there anyone out there familiar with the area with some ideas? My wife is just getting started, so areas with low traffic density would be the best. We're visiting my mother, so it's imperative that we have a good excuse to get out of the house :D . Thanks!

Lake Padden has some nice trails. They got a nice casual trail around the perimeter of the lake with some trailheads off of the main. It's about 15min. north of Mt. Vernon. I'm not sure what exit it is. I'm sure if you ask a local they might be able to tell you.

Deception Pass off of Highway 20 west of Mt. Vernon and Burlington. Take hwy 20 west till you come to the Oak Harbor Whidbey Island turn off in which you turn left. Follow the road till you hit the big bridge and the State Park is about 2 miles pass the bridge on the right. You can also park at the bridge and walk you bikes down the stairs going under the bridge.

Have fun.

I'd get a copy of "Bicycling the Backroads of Puget Sound" by Bill & Erin Woods (Mountaineers Books) and check out ride #36, the Skagit Flats.
Might be a lot of cars as the Tulip Festival is just cranking up.
But oh what a feast for the eyes!.
