I just bought a 2007 SRAM Rival group minus cranks and BB for my Flyte frame. I know about spacing issues with rear cassettes and chain width, etc. What I'm fuzzy on is how 8, 9, 10spd chains work with randomly selected chainrings. Are the rings different widths? Am I likely to have problems from randomly picking out a good deal on a compact double off of ebay?

This is my first build and I'm also fairly new to cycling, so I really don't know and would appreciate a little guidance.

Thanks

This is mainly a marketing distinction, very unusual for it to actually be a problem in real life.

The various "speed" chainrings don't vary in width but they do vary in spacing between adjacent rings. 9-speed rings are closer together than 8-speed rings to keep the narrower chain from hanging up between the rings during a shift. 10-speed rings are slightly closer still.

Ok, thanks guys. I'll try the triple I already have and just adjust it for the large and middle rings and then decide what I want for a permenant choice.
