He started out behind me. I had a good line and was able to get ahead. He had to deal with issues in the traffic and was behind me. It wasn’t long though before we were back together again. He was very gracious, answering my questions about his riding, the races he does and cycling in general. It was a pretty straight-forward ride at that point, you could almost fall asleep as you went forward. He eased into the peloton and didn’t make any moves.

We got to the half way point in the main pack. It was a quick run through town and then on to the last half. I jumped and got ahead a bit, but he brought me back and was soon up ahead of me. We settled into a rhythm, and stayed about the same relative to each other until close to the finish. He was out ahead, but I kept him in sight. We went through the kilometer-to-go banner and I slowly overtook him.

Then my bags rolled onto the carrousel ahead of his, and I had to bid him farewell. He’s in Costa Rica going to improve on his 5th place overall position from last year at the Ruta de los Conquistadores, to be held from Friday to Sunday this week. I was traveling to Costa Rica to work on our hotel project.

It was great to meet Jeremiah for the first time—truly a nice guy. I wished him well, and am hoping to read of a top three finish this week.

So- now to tell you what really happened… I was at the ticket counter at Dulles waiting for my turn—I was on a 6:05 am flight to Houston (via Continental) and then on to Costa Rica. Two people behind me was this guy with a bike bag and a helmet on his backpack. Knowing the Ruta was this weekend, I figured odds were that he was going there—so I asked him if he was going there. He was surprised I knew about it. I mentioned that I had attempted it last year, but a back problem defeated me. After a bit of conversation he admitted he finished fifth last year—and his name was Jeremiah Bishop. I had never met him, but had heard a lot about him. As it ended up, I got the good ticket agent, who was very nice and peasant—he got the one who had gotten out of be the wrong side—she even asked what was in the box… it was clearly labeled. She then told him he couldn’t have any bag that weighed over 70 pounds—really making things rough.

So, while he was dealing with the ticket agent, I went to stand in line to get through security. We had a short wait for the plane, and then we got into the commuter flight to Houston. Small jet, one seat on one side, two on theo other. I was seated a row ahead of him. In Houston we had about 20 minutes to get to our connecting flight—on the other side of the airport. When I got to the plane, they were already boarding. Jeremiah was trying to get a phone number in Costa Rica, so he was somewhere behind me. I settled into a seat near the back of the plane, and Jeremiah was in one nearer the front.

A largely uneventful flight—they served us breakfast, and the movie (Poseidon) wasn’t bad. We got into Costa Rica, and Jeremiah was ahead of me going through immigration. When we got to baggage pickup we chatted some more. My bags arrived first, so I bid farewell and good luck to Jeremiah.

I wish him all the best this weekend—it is going to be tough this year because it has rained daily for the passt few weeks—mud is going to be the order of the day.

I did a 46 km ride yesterday—along the beach between our property and Dominical (one of the surfing beaches). It was hot, it was hilly but it felt good to be on a bike with temperatures in the 80s.

Sadly, the race did not go well for him. From today's cyclingnews.com:

Hector Leonardo Paez (Full Dynamix) solidified his lead in La Ruta de los Conquistadores on day two with another victory, However, his victory was at the expense of his main rival Jeremiah Bishop (Trek-VW), who crashed heavily five kilometers from the finishing, breaking at least two teeth and a bone in his nose, according to organisers. Bishop finished the stage in second, but was immediately taken to a local hospital and then transferred to San Jose, bringing an end to his race.

Took second in the stage after what must have been a vicious face-plant. Dude's tough as nails, from the sound of it...

really too bad-- the quotes in the local papers here say he was trying to make up time (he was in 2nd place overall after day 1-14+ minutes back) on the downhill. He was on the last downhill section, and according to published reports, either 2 or 5 k from the finish. He fell heavily. The leader passed him slowly, with lots of people around him. Jeremiah picked himself up and struggled to the finish-- where he finished the stage in 2nd place for the second day in a row.

he's a fighter-- he'll be back-
