Rides and Races - Ottawa?!?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just wanted to see if there were any Ottawa, Ontario riders lurking on here?
I haven't seen to many but I have notice a HUGE expolsion of fixie riders in the city this year. What are you riding? Where are you riding?
Let's get some capital chatter goin on!!

i'm just a new kid. i converted crappy miyata 100 with a nice surly hub and a velocity rim. i could only afford one rim so i'm that kid with the one cool red back rim. i'm working on building a nishiki up to ride in the winter now. i've really got the fever, i eat, sleep and breathe bikes now.

I'm the dink riding the Steamroller with the white Deep Vs and stupid-narrow risers.
In the rain and the snow, I'm on a super-tight old french conversion with full fenders and a multicoloured rattlecan paint job. It's parked outside the Dominion (or at CHEO) often enough so if you see me, come on in and say hi.

i cant remember if thats the same bike i saw at phat moose last week, if so it was beautiful! if not, post some pics!

It probably was. Red anodized Phils and red grips, with a black fork and the grey '05 paint. It was in there for a week or so getting a new Phil BB.
I should really get some pictures of the bike before the snow hits. That bike doesn't see winter.

Used to ride fixed in Ottawa on a beat to **** Norco Competition conversion (6 years ago or so? Geez, I'm getting old). Now relocated to Toronto.
Tag, I'm out.

I'm the amish looking dude riding around on an orange mercier with orange bullhorns. Soon it will magically become a white miele conversion for winter.
see you on the roads hopefully

There is a guy here I met at CM a few months ago with a chrome Carleton I think. He started a thread about selling one of two awesome wheelsets. I don't remember his screen name though.
Edit: It is "hmai18" and the bike was a Kabuki he got for a song. I haven't seen him since though.
Here's the thread. (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=182680&highlight=Ottawa)

That is a sexy bike fo show... I know the guy through facebook, but I have yet to see his ride lurking around carleton.
Also talk to phat moose bout the bareknuckle... They might be getting one in once they start ordering from EAI, although that is pure speculation.
Grimlock
11-19-06, 06:49 PM
Yeah, I was the one who talked to Kent about ordering through EAI. I was talking about the Bareknuckle, showed him their website and he called them right then about distribution stuff.
I'm trying to decide between the Bareknuckle and a Pista Concept frameset from Full Cycle.

hmmm interesting... do you know if they have a price on the barenuckle yet?

I don't know if they do, sorry. Call 'em and I'm sure they'll tell you.

I saw someone today at Place du Portage with a new Steamroller. I've never seen another one on the road before today. Anyone know him?
Red Pogliaghi conversion during summer, I love that thing. I don't ride during winter... yet (actually rode today, but this doesn't count, due to the ridiculous amount of non-snow).
Grimlock
12-21-06, 11:53 AM
Yeah, the non-snow thing is really making me reconsider putting away my Steamroller for the winter. Then I'll ride over a ton of salt and gravel and I'll remember.
Actually, I haven't ridden in a week because of a wicked chest-cold. It's drivin' me nuts to have to cab and bus everywhere.

12-21-06, 06:17 PM
Damn...me too.
I'd be doing some mad riding this week...but I get winded just walking up the stairs.

Rode in this morning for the first time in exactly two weeks. I was up an hour early and totally ready to go. It was strange; I usually have the hardest time getting out of bed. The ride in was a little slow and a little rusty but on the way home I was absolutely flying. It felt so good. I crossed someone on the Vanier Parkway riding what looked like a conversion with orange Deep-Vs and Nitto bullhorns. Sound familiar? If there's someone in my neighbourhood to ride with, I'd love to know'em. Jedi, was it you?

Not me... I'm in toronto for the holidays right now. That and I'm still bikeless from my accident. My parents suprised me with a fat cheque for the holidays though so I frame hunting I will go :-)

So I'm still waiting on that story Steve.
In other news, I'm going to be working at Full Cycle starting in March, so y'all should stop by and visit. Drop a Bikeforums or NattyFab reference and get a discount*.

Ahhh ****... sorry man, I got hit by an SUV making a lane change while riding down bronson towards carleton. Thankfully she wasn't goin very fast and I was able to slow down a bit so I was unharmed. Sadly the front wheel and frame didn't make it though :-( Although I'm in on that iro group buy so I should have a sweet ride set up by summer!
I'll definitely be swinging by full cycles though! 0% is better than nothing ;-)

Watch out for the duties on the frame!
Grimlock
01-28-07, 07:43 PM
I was actually thinking of getting in on that too, probably for my gf. Operator, how much do you think duties will run?
Steve, is the woman('s insurance) paying for the repairs?

we need to ride after all this rain passes.

Indeed. I went out after work on Friday to see if I could steal anyone away from CM to go on a fun ride a little faster than the 5km/h the ride usually goes. I caught up with a few people just after everyone had split up but nothing fun was had.
Just post here or send me a PM if anyone wants to ride anytime. I'm always down.

Hmm ... now that I've embarrassed myself by making another thread about Ottawa ... where all you peeps at? I work at MEC (in westboro) and more than a few fixed gear riders come through my cycling department on a regular basis. Any of them be you folks? No? Where do you kids hang out? Can I come too?
I ride a Norco Monterey SL (Ishwata Gold tubing) conversion - flat black rattle job with risers. Some courier in town is rocking the same frame with the original 80s blue and white paint job.
I'm in on the IRO deal too, as is one of my co-workers. Both of us are stoked about the frames, although the wait is kind of a killer. Grr.
sweep242: Pff ... i rocked fixed in Kingston 2 years ago. That's right. I'm OG. Biking in Kingston sucks.

I'm originally from Ottawa. Didn't ride fixed back when I lived there. Now I'm in the Poconos, PA and do all my riding either in Hackensack, NJ where I work or at home with all the deer, black bear and wild turkey! Not many fixed in the Poconos! hoping to come back to Ottawa eventually. Ottawa'd be a great city to ride fixed too!

@SSSasky
I got in on that IRO buy as well... i'm just trying to decide how to build it up now. If your interested in talking to some shops to see if we can get a little coin off by buying a ton of parts let me know... doubt it will happen but it never hurts to ask.
Heads up O-town, I'm gonna be stay'n in ottawa for the summer. I'll be bringing my bike (maybe 2) and I hope to see some action with ottawa BFSSFG members..

It’s not that bad really certainly different from riding in Toronto i’m just a little more aggressive.
I ride an IRO frame i'm sure you will like yours.

Speaking of Bike Polo ...
Myself and Will from Tall Tree are working on maybe getting a little west-end polo going on. We're both total n00bs at it, so are scared to play with the big kids. So we thought we'd have a little fun with some other newbies first.
Anyways, I'll keep y'all posted on any details ...
I'm down for a ride ... Thursday to Sunday works better for me, but I can probably swing M-W too, depending on the specific date ...
any of you ottawa folks do any courier work? I'm wondering if couriers in ottawa have the same influx of students in the summer causing the pay to suck..
does anyone know of any decent bike related jobs (courier, shop, food delivery) that someone like myself could pick up form about now till the end of august? or maybe even something non bike related that is decent pay, my tech skills are pretty decent (I've been work IT for the past year)..
ottawa where the **** are you guys?
Grimlock
06-04-07, 07:26 AM
I'm not a messenger but I'm fairly sure they get a ton of newbies in the summer. With that said, there are always jobs available if you look in the right places.
