Well last sunday, it was very windy outside, like 40 or 50mph gusts. I tried going for a ride, but almost got blown off the road so I said screw it. Well, three trees in my yard took a tumble and ripped the lines off my house :(.

The TV and DVD player released the magic smoke, needless to say these are retired now. So that night, having no power, the power company came to repair the line. THey did a splice job, not replacing anything really. The guy tells us we should be good to go....

The main breaker is turned on, and we hear pops from upstairs. Several light bulbs burst inside, the microwave and dishwasher have smoke :(. Some various small appliances were shot too. *sigh* So we are with no power or internet for a few days until an electrician comes and replaces a breaker. Of course comcast takes their time in coming, I called them telling that the line was broken the day it happened and was told on the phone that my modem is hte problem. I called again, got the same response. Called a third time, success! A guy just came this morning. Loe and behold, my modem is A okay. We had 240v going through out outlets for a brief time  .

My moms computer wont turn on, though mine is okay. I take a peak inside hte power supply, the fuse is shot of course but the aluminum cap on the 200v electrolytic capacitor completely burst! There was that capacitor juice all inside the power supply. Luckily, that was the only problem.

Life without internet is hard :p

Insurance

I guess insurance will pay up to 1k per appliance broken. So far as a list we are up to...
Computer power supply
The electric hood of the gas stove, the circuitry which controls the fan is shot.
Dishwasher circuitry.
Parts of stereo
TV, DVD, etc.
Printer

To my surprise, the modem survived! The cable modem AND router. My comptuer surviving is a miracle too.

Sounds like the power company has some liability. Wonder if your insurance company will think so as well? Insurance companies are eager to pass the buck now days.

Gotta love PSNH.

yea PSNH did make a little screw up. THe electrician who came here explained that in the splicing job, the neutral and positive had resistance where it should not, giving the 240V. He called them up, 30 minutes later they replaced the cable on the whole street.

7 or 8 years ago we had the same thing happen, lines ripped off the house. PSNH fixed it the next day, never a problem.

The electrician says that the insurance company will probably not go after PSNH, as they have the "act of god clause"
