Siu asked my opinion about something, but I think she needs some other opinions too.

She is trying to decide between buying a cute little 250-300 dollar pet tortoise like this one,
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m267/Michiganderbiker/IndianStarTortoise.jpg

or some bike parts, namely new bars, a pink headset and pink hubs.

The tortoise reminds her of an old army helmet like this one-

She thinks the tortoise is incredibly cute, but they aren't so much fun to play with as conventional pets.

Which do you think she should get?

What is the significance of an old army helmet?

I was wondering if the helmet had a special meaning, and therefore the tortoise would have a special meaning, or is it just cute because it looks like a helmet.

When I first saw him, he was so cute! He's not flat like the usual tortoise, he's higher! :p And with the crazy designs that are on the shell, I thought of a 60's army helmet.

I was thinking of naming him sixty. :D

He is quite cute. But will he always be cute? How big will it get?

Two feet across. Not too big. For a tortoise. :p

I vot for option #3, she should get a couple of rats. Rats are cool, they give kisses :)

You do realize that a tortoise is a lifetime pet as they live a hundred years or more.

This is tiki,
it's about a year old on that pic, she's 5 years old now. They are cute, mine is very friendly. The only thing is it gets costly with heating lamps and you have to keep making new homes. It grows pretty fast, it's now a foot and a half in diameter and will get to be about 3 foot around. her new home is made out of an old coffee table with fiber glass for walls and I have to make a new one soon, she's allready outgrowing it!

I'd say tortoise since I love reptiles! Do a lot of research to find out what you're getting into - I had an iguana for years and while I wouldn't trade the experience I was able to start off on the right foot!

Make sure you have a vet in place that is familiar with them in place before you take the leap. Nothing worst than having a situation and then trying to find a vet in a hurry.

Bike parts come and bike parts go, but how often do you find a tortoise name 60?

However, I still like my pet rock.

Get the hubs and the headset. Then spend $10 on an army helmet at a surplus place. Put the helmet in a box surrounded by some hay or something. Give it a name. You'll never notice the difference.

That's messed up. :( ;)

Yeah. So far a couple of BFer's had yahoo'd me telling me they aren't a whole lot of fun. Plus I've got the two dogs and two cats....

Then someone told me that with the pink CK's claim they donate to the Cancer Foundation but it's only one dollar per part. :(

Okay, so get the headset and the hubs, and buy your army helmet (you should be able to find a washer or dryer box pretty much for free) and hay is cheap. Think up a really good, creative name. Then take all the money you would have spent on heat lamps, food, vet bills, etc., and donate it to a breast cancer charity. Take a good tax deduction for that.

Man, I am just full of useful suggestions this morning!

No reptiles stink unless you don't clean their cages/substrate. Let anything fester long enough and it will smell badly - clean often! Beware of cedar - it's poisonous to many creatures far and wide.

Get the hubs!!

no... get the HUBS!!!

But then you'll also have to get a new wheelset built up.

The turtle looks boring. I mean which will you have more fun with? Sure you can stroke the turtle, but you can stroke the hubs too. The hubs are alot sweeter looking too.

Dogs and cats are one thing, but taking a living thing out of its natural habitat and turning it into pet doesn't make much sense.

well my honest opinion?
they are nice but they sleep a lot and all they care about is digging and eating, beside watching how amazing they look, they are rather boring reptils and....yes... they dont smell but their "business" can stink up a house, specially when the size of it is as big as human waste:eek:
they are costly a bit, the heating lamps are expensive, thier home as to be perfect habitat for them, and it requires daily clean up and they get very big forcing you to come up with new habitats over and over.
there is some thoughts to be put into this.:)

They can outlive you too, can't they? Harriet (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/4438448.stm), was collected by Darwin and is over 175 now.

Thank you so much, BDG. I think you really really helped me make up my mind. Especially the part about the big poops. I don't mind cleaning up so much but then if I already have the cats and dogs, a fish tank, 2 lizards and 2 snakes, I think I just might be pushing it a bit. Plus it already is kind of hard if I ever want to go on a vacation. I appreciate the input! :)

And yes, Jsharr, CK products DO last a long time. I might go with the idea of getting the pink head set/hubs and donating to breast cancer. Thank you BlueBottle for that one ;) .

Anybody out there got an old 60's army hemet and some hay?? :D
