I was fascinated by the team time trial. Some good riding by Postal and even better by Kelme, ONCE, and Credit Agricole. I was glad to see Jonathan Vaughters right up there with the team. He has had bad luck in past Tours. I hope he does well. Maybe near the front at at mountain stage finish. For him to win one would probably be too much to hope for.
For those that didn't see it, Postal was fastest by nearly a minute at the third time check. They had a beautiful double pace line going that rolled down the road like a juggernaut. Armstrong was like an iron man. Occasionally they would go to a single pace line with Armstrong leading, standing up, for a long pull. Then with about 17 km to go Vandenberghe (sp?) either touched wheels or slipped on a paint stripe and went down. Heras, right behind, went over him and fell hard on his right knee. I was surprised he could get up. The team held back, losing 30-40 seconds. They picked up the stragglers and still finished in the lead. Of course, later teams beat them, but at least they were ahead of Telekom. After the TTT, Credit Agricole riders were 1-2-3 in general classification. Stuart O'Grady retained the yellow jersey.
How it might have been if it hadn't been raining!
