I was talking to Extort this morning about this ride, I did it about 12 years ago (damn I am getting old) and it got me thinking. It is the highest peak in Orange County (according to Franko's map) so if anyone is interested in conquering this please post here. I am just trying to get a feel of how many people would be interested.

I have a feeling that would definitely be a killer ride.
What route would you take?

Off to google for info to see if it's out of my league... or not. Do you have a date in mind?

I've done it via Silverado Cyn > Maple Spring > Main Divide. It's not terribly steep or technical, but is a long slow climb. It can also be done via Harding Truck Trail > Main Divide.

I'd be interested in going again, for sure.

really? so one could pretty much granny up it? I'll have you know, my new bike has a 22 in the front and a 34 in the back.... I have NO idea what I'd ever be on that would require that gearing though ;)

Chim you are right, from what I remember it was slow and long. For me this is a test to see how much better I am (or not) when I was 23 years old.

I suppose so. Via Harding, it's about 15 mi one way. It can be less via Silverad/Maple Spring, depending where you park/start. Elevation gain is something like 4,000'.

I have NO idea what I'd ever be on that would require that gearing though ;)
I have a love/hate thing with my granny gear. :p

should be interesting none the less, now we just need a date:D

14 miles, 4200 feet of climbing, sounds like Palomar to me so should be an average of 6-7% grade for that climb:D

I think the average grade for Harding is around 7%, but that's the average. The first 4.5 -5 miles are really nasty, it levels out a bit after that. Harding Truck Trail would be a good way to go, I think it gets a lot less traffic than Maple Springs, it's not at all technical, the only hard part is the relentless climbing. I'll be in for this ride, depending on what date you guys choose. There are several options for the way down, depending on how big of a ride you want to make it. As soon as I get a little better and confident with my technical skills, I want to ride to Harding to Santiago Peak, and come down Holy Jim Trail.

if I was pushing it, it was more likely because... no, wait... was dripping springs the last stop??? Nope, I rode the whole way up that... although I did push it up the teensy uphill to start back down ;) I'm still a little nervous w/the whole starting out uphill thing ;)

Actually, usually I'm pushing the mtn bike because I can't handle the terrain, not as much about the hills (that' only on the road bike  )

But really, the hardtail I was riding on that ride is a  24:30 or something... big difference between that and a 22:34

I'm sure I'll find some use for it....

Yeah, you can practically winch yourself up anything with that 22/34. The problem is keeping that front end from floating...:D

I've always wanted to do this ride around 3-4AM and reach the towers by sunrise.
So lights are only need for half the ride, and sunshine on the way down.

that might be a LIL to early for me, it will take a good 70-80 minutes just to get there from Esco

Sounds similar to the Mt. Wilson Toll Road--I'd use it as an excuse to get back on the mtb (it's been ~2 years since I've been on it).

I would be interested if I still lived there. I went up it ten years ago on my bianchi volpe with the Orange County Wheelmen. All of the others had Mountain bikes. The sand patches were the most fun.

Count me in. I did it a couple of years ago during Santa Ana winds. When we got to the top, the puddles of water where actually ice. It would be nice to do it under a little bit warmer conditions.

We have to set a new date

jsigone
11-09-06, 11:54 PM
Nothing is set for Dec 2nd or 3rd. If we dont' do this ride that date, I want to get a group out to Fontucky, it's only an 8 mile trail but is a good burner and can laps if people want.

I'd be interested in doing this ride as long as there aren't any STR rides planned on the day. Santiago Peak is fun.

I guess I should warn you though: once you start reaching tops of mountains riding on the road won't satisfy you any longer. :p

Yes, I have a thing about converting roadies to mtb'ers. But I think you might already have a bit of the addiction?

Just a bit. A lot bit! :D I don't see myself abandoning the road though. Too many things to see on- and off-road. :D

Dude, it's freggin awesome. That whole ride was overcast and cool. Once you get above the clouds it was sunny and warm. Pretty cool.

Tiffany and chimvee, what keeps you stuck on the road (serious question)? The speed? The workout? Personally I'm scared of the cars and riding on a road would defeat the purpose of 'getting away from it all.'

Neccros, stop delaying it. Sell your road bike already. :)

Oops, did we accidentally hijack this thread? Sorry!

The places that a road bike can take you that a MTB can't. Same goes for my newfound liking for MTBing... it can take you places that a road bike can't. Why not enjoy the best of both?

Hard to say... but I think road and mtb are very different. Both are fun.

Speed on a roadie is definitely fun and so is the group dynamic (drafting). Overall, the physical workout is different too.

If your purpose is to get away from it all, then, your right, road riding doesn't always offer that. Sometimes, though. I actually don't mind riding in traffic - sometimes I even think it's fun... but, yeah, other times it just sucks and I want to throw things.
