Touring - Best tire width/tread

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm just building up a cyclo/touring bike, with 26" rim. For touring use, I'm not sure what tire widths and treads would be suitable. Most of the terrain I will encounter will be asphalt, with the occational dirt road or road shoulder. Any suggestions would be great... specific tire model references would be okay too.
Thanks,
Matt
I think you're going across Canada right? I went through two sets of Conti Travel Contacts (26x1.25"), replaced halfway, and didn't get a single flat.

I would run a minimum of 28s. My conti's did not last very long, but I did get a great deal of use from some Armadillos. I would take a long look at the the Scwalbe marathons too.
Agreed on the Conti's not lasting very long. I spent a good deal of time on the shoulders throught Northern Ontario though, probably didn't help. I was worried about my bald tires being too thin when I was on a rail-to -trail in Newfoundland.
