Grunting Carries No Weight in This Gym
- By CANDICE CHOI, Associated Press Writer
Thursday, November 2, 2006

(11-02) 20:21 PST Albany, N.Y. (AP) --

Some gyms forbid hogging machines and or wearing flip flops. At one gym, grunting is grounds for expulsion. Albert Argibay of Beacon, N.Y. was escorted by police officers from a gym this week for grunting — which is against Planet Fitness' rules for maintaining a non-intimidating atmosphere.

"Perhaps I grunted, perhaps I didn't. It's open to interpretation," said Argibay, a 40-year-old corrections officer. He said he had his headset on when he was lifting 500 pounds on a squat machine at the gym in Wappingers Falls, about 80 miles north of New York City.

Planet Fitness, which has 120 locations across the country, markets itself as a place where anyone can feel comfortable in its "Judgment Free Zone."

Its rules, posted around the gym, state members cannot wear bandanas, grunt or bang weights on the ground. When an offender is spotted, a "lunk alarm" sounds to warn the member.

Across its locations nationwide, there is at least one expulsion every two weeks, said Mike Grondahl, CEO of Planet Fitness. He said grunting and dropping weights are the most common offenses.

"When somebody's in there and they grunt and they grunt loud, it's trying to bring attention to themselves to show everyone how strong they are," Grondahl said.

Argibay emitted the offending grunt Monday evening, a peak time for gyms, said Carol Palazzolo, the gym's general manager. She said she heard it from across the room, even though "the place was a zoo."

"He was looking directly at me and he did it four times," she said. "I'm not a doctor, but as far as I know, a grunt is a noise that comes out of one's body that is loud and is intimidating."

An argument ensued when she confronted him, and the police were called. Argibay was escorted out, but no charges were filed.

"It's an embarrassing situation to be in, over a grunt," Argibay said.

Most clubs have policies regarding proper gym manners, although expulsions are rare, said Brooke Correia, spokeswoman for the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association.

Grunting might be more taboo in gyms like Planet Fitness, which cater to exercise novices, Correia said.

The heaviest dumb bells at Planet Fitness are 80 pounds, meaning it's a place geared toward the general public, Palazzolo said.

She didn't know if Argibay was a chronic offender — he'd only been a member since Sept. 27. But it was the first time she kicked a member out for grunting.

"I don't know the reason behind grunting or not grunting. But if you need to grunt, you may go and join another gym," she said.

Grunting is often associated with breathing while lifting heavy weight. I think that rule is completely ridiculous. But as far as I know, in california all we have are those 24 hour fitnesses. They remind me of lab rats running on a wheel.

I beg your pardon. I'm certainly no lab rat running on any wheel! And we here in California don't grunt, we emote. :p

What 24-hour Fitness are you going to that has women scantily dressed in sweaty cages? Perhaps you're confusing venues? I mean, they are both open 24 hours...:p

So that means screaming is out? Sometimes grunting is hot and sometimes not. Why would a musclehead even go to a gym with this rule? I guess that there are not that many women at the grunting allowed gym.

At least you are allowed to fart in yoga, as long as you dont laugh.

Guys who grunt and drop weights. Add that to machines covered in other people's sweat, having to listen to lousy music, and being subjected to the body odors of strangers as even more reasons why I lift at home and will never own a gym membership.

It is true at the Planet Fitness here as well. Apparently there is an alarm that you sound if somebody grunts, basically humiliating the person. A friend of mine did that enough to a guy that he just walked out

I occasionally let out a grunt, even when I am by myself, does that make me some kind of "lunkhead" reject? What is next? Exclusive gyms with private, sound proof workout rooms? What about orange ear plugs or IPODs? Few things say, "I dont give a crap about you", more than orange ear plugs. This would have made a good Seinfeld episode. What if you falsely where accused of grunting? The shame. I'd be more concerned if they did not wipe.

Grunting would be a sign of real, physical exertion. You might offend the fatties!

I'd get kicked out because I definitely laugh when I fart.

Me too. I think it's hilarious. I remember this one time that we were camping... we all just laid there for like an hour and laughed because of farts. Of course it was only me farting, and everyone laughed at me. But that's ok, cuz it was hilarious to me too :D

We'd all laugh just to make you feel like part of the group :). But we are all guys so being loud and smelly is a funny thing to us.

Man that was some funny stuff, I think in a few minutes I might go watch some of our road trip footage.

Hmmm...I don't know if I've ever had a man invite me to fart with him and his buds. This may be a first. :p ;)

We are 17-18-19 year olds, so though we are plagued with boyishly good looks, I don't know if we're men yet. So that makes it perfectly ok :D

Far away young lady!

It work make a perfect episode. Send it to Larry David. Seinfeld may be over but there is no reason it can't be an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Wow, what a horrible gym, when I work out I usually grunt, it's hard to bench 135lbs and not grunt.

usually after doing 5 sets of 20 when laying on your back lifting a 30lb weight in each hand, it's hard not to drop the effing things to.

Also, farting is funny.
