This is my first week with a new employer. I posted the question thread earlier "how long before I start commuting?".

Of course it is an image thing, I am almost embarrassed to admit, but image matters whether you like it or not. I just didn't have the nards to show up on my first day on a bike.

WELL, it finally occurred to me how I can commute AND be one of the coolest new bosses around. I was given a convenient parking space near the building entrance. Here in the snowy mid-west, that is an important and lusty perc.

I decided that what I will do is offer my parking spot to an employee designated "Success driver of the month". (get it - success driver :D It is a no brainer. All my direct reports will get a turn at the spot.

What do you think? Will this work? Any suggestions for making it as successful as possible?

Awesome, Mike! :D Your employees will love you! (But what if they emulate your bike commuting, and don't want your parking spot any more? :D )

Of course, since the employees will love him, the company will do anything to keep him, including installing indoor bike parking and lockers for all bike-commuting employees (we can hope, anyway).

Good idea, Mike-- I think it'll fly.

Anything you can do to recognize and reward your employees for a job well done will be met with enthusiasm. The fact that it's a tactic that probably hasn't been tried at your new company will show your bosses that you can think outside the box and are willing to try new ways to inspire your people. I think it's a great idea - go for it.

Brilliant! If I ever become an executive, I'll remember that one!

The State of Maine had a bill make it out of the transportation committee (unanimously), which will allow businesses to get a zero interest loan to improve bike parking facilities and install showers. Pretty neat.
