Mountain Biking - Riding on the beach a bad idea?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
This weekend I'm going camping at Fort Clinch, gonna ride some trails around there and Jerksonville.. and Fort Clinch is literally RIGHT on the beach. I was thinking going for a ride on the hard packed section of the beach sand would be fun.. but salt water concerns me, and sugar sand sucks. Do you guys think this would be bad for the bike, assuming I rinse it with fresh water directly afterwards and avoid the salt water at all costs?

I wouldn't worry to much. Do a good cleaning and if you are really worried regrease :)
Considering that my childhood bike rusted to death there. Ride in it's memory Jim. Just don't leave your bike outside. Jerksonville? I'll admit I haven't lived there for 6 or 7 years but I don't remember it as being THAT bad. <shrug>
Sand in the chain.... sounds like sandpaper. Have fun, and as the others said.... clean that bike.

Try to judge the outgoing tide. That way, you might get some hard-packed sand without the waves running over it.

i went on vacation for a week in surf side, near galveston, last year and took my bike with me. I rode it every day some on the sand the rest on the roads near the beach. If your going to do it you must was it with fresh water after each use, lube the chain AND keep it in doors. All metal parts will rust immidately if you do not. Heat + Humidity + Salt = instant rust.
Cool, thanks for the advice guys :)
I just thought riding on that hardpacked beach sand while the tide was out would be a fun idea. I could cover a large portion of the beach that way too... I can view more babes this way :o

Here's a tip! Get a can of spray silicone from Home Depot! Coat the bike (frame, drive..etc.) EXCEPT BRAKES! with the stuff before you go! Then immediately after the wash!

Grab a video camera, apply to the brakes, seat and grips, then attempt:

No Fear, chicks dig the body damage.
Not too bloody, because they don't like the mess, but a nice set of scrapes and bruises can score some major sympathy.

I'm getting a headache!
