An eye infection hit me pretty hard, and glasses (instead of my usual contacts) weren't cutting it. I had to apply eye drops every hour, the glasses didn't give me periferal vision, and it was all a super pain in the watusi. I didn't feel safe riding.

But finally, I'm healed (I think!) and back in my contacts. So I'm back in the saddle today after a 17 day layoff, the longest since picking up a bike again back in June '05.

Yes, it's a setback for my TdF training, but I'll just have to redouble my efforts for a while. It felt GREAT to be back out there, in my new jersey, after such a long time off. 85 degrees, winds 6 mph. And nothing is sore afterward!

Love that feeling of being on the bike! :)

Maybe I should buy a new one? :D

Glad you've recovered and feel safe to ride again.

Does this mean you'll be posting to the forum, at least occasionally?* :D

* I certainly hope so: your threads seem to generate more frivolity, comment, not-so-serious argument and general hocum that almost any others...:)

Whatever you do- Do not start on that line of thought. (Again) It can cause you a lot of Eye problems studying the catalouges. Perhaps that is why you got the infection in the first place--- Looking at all that bike porn.

Great news, Gary...both about your eye, and getting on the bike again. What a day to do it, too! Record high here in L.A. for the date, I believe. So, San Diego would have to be perfect.

A new bike is a great idea...but what bike should you buy?

Maybe you should post that question for us to ponder! :)

Yes, bike porn causes eye strain...and acne and hair to grow on your cycling gloves and and and

Stapfam, thanks for reminding us of the admonitions that many of us received in puberty...:D

I don't know. For the first time in 17 day DG may be able see his way clear to buy a new one....

2007 is almost here and you are currently stuck riding 2004 and 2005 bikes.

Let's get with it. The US economy needs your bike purchase!

The question is never -- "should I buy a new one?"

Instead, it is alway -- which one? . . . or why stop at one?

Glad to hear you are back in the saddle.

This winter riding stuff is just killer in San Diego. Sun beating down all day long, no wind, it's just awful. I may have to get a trainer so I can ride indoors where it's comfortable.

Oh, and BP -- wanted to say I'm glad you weren't hurt in your car accident the other day. That's terrible news, but good to hear you came through just fine. Hope your bike is all better real soon. :)

Since your back, maybe it's time for a new avatar. Let's see--- which famous painting you can imitate this time? Mona Lisa? George Washington crossing the Delaware?

About bikes, Gary, you need to get back in touch with your bicycling roots. Something from the '60s makes a great deal of sense for you. I've got this thing for Schwinns, but there are lots of options. John E lives in San Diego and has some really nice vintage rides. Maybe you can try one of his beauties.
