Mountain Biking - Loving my new Brodie !

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I picked up my bike today and it's great ! I love it. Got lots of comments on it at my university classe today which was pretty cool too - small class so we can bring our bikes in to the classroom.
I love the disk brakes and the ride is great - just sucks up bumps like nothing and that is only on the shi**y roads around here. Can't wait to try it off roading. The disk brakes are great so far and are already breaking in great. I rode it for about 4 hours today with lots of stops and really noticed an improvement by the end of the ride.
I am getting my front rotor changed to an 8" as my boyfriend wants to ride it too - should I let him ?! :-) LOL...maybe not.
The only thing that I thought was weird is this guy in class said - "oh disk brakes, those are so hard to use when they're broken in " What's hard about them ?You squeeze the brakes and you stop. Is there something that I don't know
at this early stage or is the guy just a loser who doesn't know how to ride a bike ?
Anyway, thanks for all your help and comments before I bought it. I know now that I made the right decision.

Let him ride it once and then never let him on again :D
Maelstrom,
Yes, it is a Brodie Bruzza. I am reconsidering whether to let him ride it at all now - he may not want to stop riding it ! :-)

Its funny but us guys tend to break stuff that isn't ours...we don't mean to but it happens. Maybe you can get some free upgrades already :D...
BTW congrats

I'd make you bf get his own bike! If he were your hubby, then o.k., but bf, no way!
Tell the idiot in your class he's full of crap and doesn't know what the hell he's talking about!
Congrats!

BTW, need more pics!
Hi A2,
I forgot to mention that the same guy was also saying that "women should not have disk brakes on their bikes" so his credibility was pretty much zero immediately and he took a verbal battering from a few other cyclists before he went quietly to the back of the class and kept his mouth shut thereafter. What an idiot !
Anyway, I'll send a couple of pics later today.

I'll tell my wife to go beat him up!

Lots of people wanted to beat him up - I don't think he'll be talking too much today.

Of Justen, of course. And maybe with her bike :o
Hi,
I love your message with the little signs - LOL !!
I will make sure to take some pictures today - of the BIKE...pics of me will come later when I am out on the trails - sound okay ? ;-)
I am just going to go and get the 8" rotor put on the front and get the tires swapped - then I'll send the pics.
Justen
I suppose I can wait..... if I have to :D

Hey Justen,
I have been following you decision making, and you're questions on disc brakes for a while. Do your new brakes sqeak or not?
Also, why are you swapping tires already?
I'm still waiting on my pics, Justen :D

Hi,
So far, the brakes have been fantastic ! They feel way stronger than they did initially which i had been told would happen by members here, due to the break in period. I do not regret having them at all and am very pleased with my decision thus far. I did go with the 8" rotor on the front but will probably not recognize the full benefits of that until I go off-roading.
As for the tires..I need tires that will work well for road cycling too as I am using this bike for my daily 30 km rides as well. The tires that came with the bike were way too heavy and not appropriate for road cycling at all.

Justen,
Congrats on your Bruzza. I have an '02 Bruzza and love it. I have upgraded many components on it including XTR der's front & rear, XTR cassette, XT RapidFire shifters, Easton CT2 carbon bar.....and now I'm going to go with a pair of Mavic x3.1 tubeless rims laced to XT hubs with Continental VerticalPro tires.
Once that's all done, I will have spent a little more on upgrades than I did on the bike in the first place! But like you said....the bike just feels great.
After all that rambling, I am curious that you say you upsized your front rotor to 8". Were they not OEM at 8"? My '02 Bruzza (which is Blue, BTW, not grey like I would guess yours is if it's an '03) came with 8" rotors front and rear.
I'm also happy with my Hayes mech's.
Jon
Hi Jon,
It's cool to talk to somebody else with a Bruzza. I have not upgraded anything on it yet as just don't have the budget to do that right now. I really do enjoy it as it is though...haven't done much downhill/MTB stuff on it yet but am looking forward to it.
I have to be honest that I am now a bit ticked with the LBS that I bought it from. I have the 02 Bruzza which is the blue with that silver writing on it like yours. I had thought that the 8" rotors were standard
but the LBS said no. I opted to get the 8" rotor put on the front. Then I go in there today and see another Bruzza sitting on their show floor with 8" rotors and asked why and they said it was custom ...I say that's BS and I'm going to talk to the manager tomorrow.
Also...I think I got crap tires too. did you switch your tires out for better ones ?
I love the disk brakes. I am still braking them in but they are awesome. Very little pressure to get strong braking.
I feel kind of ripped off about the 8" rear rotor though but I must admit that the LBS has offered to switch the tires for me if I want. Not sure about the rotors.
Justen
Oh...Jon...sorry, I missed the part about the tires in my first read through. You changed to vertical pro tires. How much did they cost to upgrade to ?
Anyway, congrats on your Bruzza too. I still love riding this bike. I have never cycled so much as I have with this bike and I am amazed at how many people are stopping to comment on what a cool bike it is. Just have to be careful that they aren't planning to steal it on me !

Justen,
Go here '02 Brodie Bruzza Factory Spec (http://www.brodiebikes.com/2002/specs/bruzza.html) . This list is directly from the Brodie web site and lists all of the major components that were factory on the '02 Bruzza, including 8" Hayes rotors.
The factory tires were WTB Motoraptor 2.4" (also listed on the spec), which are not bad, but more aggressive than I need. I have not yet made the switch to the Continentals because my wheels are not built yet (my Mavic rims are on order). The rims/hubs/tires ended up right around $600. Sounds like a whack of cash, but less than half of what my LBS wants for a set of '03 CrossMax rims all laced up & pretty and with fresh rubber.
Show your LBS the factory spec on the '02 Bruzza and don't let them hose you.
Jon
I have the same wheelset you're getting Muskoka. It's put up with 6+ foot drops and hard riding without needing to be trued.. I'm happy with them, and even happier with the performance of tubeless tires.
