Bicycle Mechanics - Shifting question?

Hey all.

Lately I've been having a problem with my shifting. It seems that when I shift down on the rear der. that I usually have to either keep my thumb pressing the shifter a little longer or I have to nudge it a little to get it to get in or stay in gear. Also, sometimes after a time of being in gear it will just jump out and the chain will start skipping, and if I pedal a few times it will jump back in or I have to nudge once again with my thumb.

This only happens going down gears, never up. It also appears that it only happens around the 7th, 6th, 5, and maybe 4th gears. I have an 8spd. Thanks for any advice on how to cure this problem.

Sounds like your cables have stretched a little. Turn the adjuster on the end of the cable, (either end but I would do the rear by the derailleur) a half turn counter-clockwise. This will add more tension to the cable. You may have to turn it a little more but I would turn a half turn at a time to begin with.

I've been told to check for wear on your rear freewheels/cassette gears.

Well, it's a brand-new cassette, brand-new new wheels including hubs. I have turned the adjuster but thanks to some f@#$%$#@#'d up weather here in Toronto I won't be able to test it for a day or so. Thanks for the advice... if anybody has anything else please speak up.

Did you replace the cassette without buying a new chain? A new chain is a must for a new cassette, the 2 wear out together, so the chain is stretched to the worn out cassette. If this is the case, new chain for you.

your right middi zon if you buy a new cass you must buy a new chain our you will most certainly go to hell well ok your chain will skip you wont go to hell tighten you cables and if that doesnt work try buying the new gt ruckus 2.0 i drive it shifts like a dream

oh and i forgot if you run your old chain on that new cass. it will shorten the life of it 10 fold dog get a new chain

Yes, I also put a brand-new chain on it. Sorry, I forgot to mention that.

Try the minor cable adjustment first. Also check the jockey wheels (pullys) on your derailer. If they have nice sharp teeth, they are worn out.

how old is your derailure (im glad this isnt spelling class) if its lx or above you can change the spring they do wear out belive it or not, lo,l you can get replacment PULL springs i would try that considering the new purchases you have made

the front is about 2+ years and the rear is about 2+weeks.

Thanks DirtGrinder. I tried out your suggesting and that did the trick. Every gear now shifts smoothly. I had to give it two turns. Thanks to some $#%#%$'d up weather over here it took awhile to test it out. Thanks. Another problem solved.

Good deal Total. Glad you got it fixed. I hear you about the weather. It was great here for about a week then got really cold with snow, rain, sleet etc. But now it's near 80 again. :)
