View Full Version : Rear axle in two pieces??

While repacking my bearings for the first time, I noticed the rear axle was in two different pieces. The skewer is the only thing holding them together. They didn't appear broken. And when twisting the two ends clockwise they appear to lock into position. It is a 105 hub. Is this normal, or is the axle broken?

No this is not normal. Your rear axle is broken. Here is a exploded view of the 105 rear hub.

Thanks Hunter. I guess this explains the slight wobble my freewheel has. I've probably been riding it quit some time like this. BTW, Shimano has an excellent site.

Any direction on where I can order just the axle? It's an older 6 speed hub. Would most bike stores carry this part?

Thanks again,

Cat

If anyone would have one it would be:
http://www.loosescrews.com
Other than that your LBS may have one.

Thanks. Loosescrews.com does have the part I need, but of course, they are on vacation 'til September. Arrrgghh! I'll check the local bike stores, but I'm sure they'll want me to upgrade to a new bike. They always do. BTW the part is a shimano quick-release rear axle M10x1x137mm. I'm not having any luck finding other online bike stores with this part.

Thanks.

You won't either. They do not make that stuff anymore. So it is whoever has it laying around.

Yo Tracy, get the LBS to check the alignment of your rear dropouts ,missalignment can bust your axle !!

You might try these guys:
http://www.recycledcycles.com/

If not, search the "for sale" section of Roadbikereview.com and see if you can find a matching hub to cannabilize for parts.

same thing happened to me on my six speed freewheel, then i got the wobbling that goes along with it. most shops should have an axle that will fit this. the shop i went to had one that was a little long, but were able to cut it a bit shorter and now works great. good luck

What is the deal with axle standards. Apart from length, is there any difference in diameter, thickness or thread type ?
Can you fit any Shimano axle in its place?

there are all kinds of different axle sizes and threadings. you'd have to match up the old with the new. not sure though if any shimano axle would subsitute, i'd call shimano and ask them.

According to all the references I can find, Shimano use 1mm pitch threads with 10mm diam. Any Shimano axle should do the job.

This ref is full of great stuff.

MichaelW,
I am not trying to bash on ya, but a XT parralax axle will not work in his hub. It is a 11mm axle.
Same goes for XTR it is 11mm tapered to 10mm at the end. My pooint is not "any" shimaNO axle will work.

;)

Thanks guys! I got a 137 mm Shimano axle from the local bike shop! Seems to be working fine.
