I don't like integrated shifter/brake levers so I like #1.

I agree and pricepoint has them for $65

Can you fill us in on why you'd like to know? Are you considering a purchase?

Maybe if you'd like to tell us a bit more you'd find a few people would be able to give you specific advice for your circumstances.

I agree w/Mael, I prefer seperate shifter pods!

There won't be a quality difference in the shifters - they are both the same version of XT. It can be considerably cheaper to buy a brake/lever combo then to buy both pieces seperately from some places, but I stay away from the combos. If you stay with the shifter and brake lever seperate, you don't need to worry about replacing both if you break one of the two things. Being seperate also allows for more adjustment and movement around the bar. I also find them easier to service seperately. If you're on a small budget, the combos are quite a bit cheaper though. It's personal preference.

A long time ago during my youth when my cycling budget was primarily defined by my non-cycling parents, I had a Huffy "ATB". I ended up trashing the low-end Suntour rear der. and needed a new one. At least my parents gave me the money to buy a new part since they knew I was using the bike to commute to school.

Of course, one can't simply walk into a bikeshop and ask for the same el-cheapo replacement part and I certainly had no such illusions of finding that part at the same K-Mart from which the bike was originally purchased, so I ended up with a pretty decent Suntour XCE rear der. that cost about $20 at the time from a LBS. I think that was my first real exposure to a bike shop and I soon began saving up for a real bike shortly afterwards. It took me most of a year of saving spare lunch money before I had enough to get a Specialized Hardrock but it was well worth it.

Funny thing is during that time, had my parents given me the money outright for a real bike, it would have cost them less than slowly shelling out cash for replacement parts (cranks and brakes soon went afterwards) for that Huffy. However, they refused to see the value in spending $300 for a decent quality bike versus $150 for a heavy low-quality department store toy that constantly required fixing. On the plus side, I did gather a better appreciation for quality bikes because of my experience.

We all start somewhere at least this kid is showing an interest and is riding...

I'm not knocking the original poster or his bike. Quite the contrary actually... I agree that it's good that he's out there riding. I guess I'm just trying to say the same thing... you work with what you have. I would rather see someone riding a beater bike than see an expensive bike sitting in a garage not being used.

Sorry I wasn't directing that at you but at people in general. I read your post and understood your point...I was just summing it up ;)

I'm sorry, perhaps that came out wrong. I ride a beater huffy, but it is an exercise in keeping the bike rolling at minimal cost.

PTerman, I'm curious, are you buying these shifters to upgrade, or to replace a broken pair? If it is to upgrade, I simply wouldn't do it. Its not worth the $$. If it is a replacement, I still wouldn't do it. For one thing, those are 9-speed shifters, and your bike is most likely a 7 or 8 speed. They will shift, but there will be an extra click at the end of the range, and you won't like it. I would go for alivo or acera. those are 8-speed, and of decent quality. Best of all they are less $$.

no the huffy is my brothers i own a mgx wich needs alot of work now and i have a g/t i'm going to buy fur $50 bucks i need som shocks fur it. I repeat again the piece of sh.. huffy isn't mine k guys
