Bicycle Mechanics - some hayes and fork questions
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
To those who've used both 6 and 8" discs, how much difference does it make in how little lever pressure it takes?
Do the softer pads make less noise?
I assume to go to an 8" disc i'd need a different caliper adapter, yes?
I want to sell the axel super manitou off my specialized. Will many others be able to use it on thier bike, and if so, what do i have to measure so they'll know whether they can use it? Is $60 a reasonable price? (1 month old)

Dude, $60.00? I'll buy it! I've got a beater bike that could use a cheap fork!
What I and most people would need to know is the length of the steerer tube. You can measure this as a rough measurement from the top of the fork crown (where steerer connects to the lowers.) to the top of the stem, the of course you subtract the distance from the top of the stem to the actual top of the steerer tube (usually 1/8"-1/4").
Btw, you DO NOT need a new caliper, you will only need a new adapter! You can get these ordered from ANY bike shop! You shouldn't even have to do anything but unbolt it from your fork, remove fork, install new fork and re-connect to new fork via new adapter!
Send me a pic of the fork!

I guess you mis-read my post, as i did say caliper adapter, not caliper. I'm pretty stupid when it comes to bike stuff, but not that stupid. :D
I'll send you pics of the fork if you want, but how would we go about doing the deal? I mean, we can't use paypal unless one of us has a paypal seller account, right?
i think the only real diff is heat transfer less heat with the larger disc oh wait that means you stop faster oopss and your brakes wont fade as fast and well less pad wear and the most important thing do you think a woman is going to be more attracted to a man with 8' or 6'?

Hmmm........good point. Do they make a 12" disc? :)
And yes, i DID say "disc", not...........well........

ummm, money order!
Dude, sorry about the caliper adapter thingy! Reading too fast, too little sleep, not enough caffine....etc.
Send me some pics! Measure that steerer tube!
Yea, but how is that secure?

I send it to you, you cash it, you send me the fork! How more secure do you want?
Heck, I'll give you my Fed-Ex # so I can even pick-up the shipping costs.
Alright, then i'll take some pics after work if you want. However, i have to tell you that the lockout went south somewhat. It still locks out the shock, but not 100%. There's a little travel. Other than that, it came on my stumpjumper that i bought about 2 months ago, and i replaced the fork about a month ago.
I'll post the stem measurments before i take pics in case you can't use it.
