General Cycling Discussion - Cycling Vacation

What area of the world would you recommend for a "bicycling vacation"? I have about 20 days in June and would like to find an ideal destination where I can use my foldable bicycle and bike maybe 2 hours a day. I'd like to be based in one city and take two hour rides each morning.

You might feel most comfortable in Britain, Canada or your own country.
We all speak the same language (more or less) and in Britain and Canada there are lots of great off road trails.

Biking in and around Toronto will give you lots of options for 2 hour trips if you are willing to be imaginative. Niagara Falls, rail trails etc. Contact me if you need more info on Canada.

Your foldable bike should be checked luggage (no extra charge) on a plane. Everything else should be carried in panniers which you can carry on board.

I really like this idea and it sounds like a nice way to take a cycle tour without having to load your panniers everyday. I agree with Stokell’s three options and unless you speak a second language or comfortable around foreign languages, you may consider another country. I think Britain is a good option for this type of tour. For Example, I would pick a small city like York, Exeter, Windsor (London) or Newcastle and enjoy the historic sights, museums, galleries, pubs and scenery in that area. Compared to America, places are relatively close together so you can make day trips to big cities or other sites. With your folding bike, you will be able to take it on the train and if it is in a bag, they will let you take in on some of the buses. Find information, contact The National Trust and English Heritage for historic sites, historic homes, gardens, etc.
If you select Canada: Quebec City, Halifax, Victoria and Niagara would be good choices as a base. June is the perfect time to visit and with the exchange rate on the dollar, Canada is affordable!

I love my cycling vacations. Been on like 5 now.. Usually ride for like 5-7 days.. Going to cross the Lonliest Road in Nevada again this year..

Riding across the Erie Canal in New York state sounds pretty interesting..
Some friends are going to do the so called "Super Tour" ride.This years ride is from Montreal to Gaspe, two weeks in August I think Considering that one...

Ireland, esp the SW corner (Co Cork)is cycling heavan. There are plenty of independant hostels.

20 days out of one city might get a bit boring. You can only do so much, unless you have some family and friends to help out with your time. You might think about splitting your riding between two or three home bases. Our cycling club will be doing a tour in the Loire Valley next summer ('04 - hope things have settled down by then) and the tour companies we discussed same with all recommended that we spend no more than three nights in one spot. Said we would not see enough if we didn't. I would think their reasoning would also hold true most anywhere.

sounds like you need to bike the great divide

I have an RV go to Florida 3 times per year for 1 week sometimes 2 weeks, carry my bike, I go by myself as wife does not like to camp or ride a bike, I have been going for several years to date have not become bored with the trip, I get up early each morning ride, back eat lunch, take a short nap, ride again, I live in a very hilly area & to go to FL to ride the flats, fast & long it is a thrill to me, counting my FL rides, I average about 4,000 MPY, but the FL rides are the highlight.

pick a place you want to go to. Remember to bring your bike. That's about it. What sounds appealing? West coast, East coast, Cote de Azur? Northern Italy might be worth looking into.

Cote D Azure.. I never saw such congestions since Miami Beach Christmas eve.. There might be circle routes away from the traffic. I did not like its hectic pace..
